Help with C1223 & C1249

I have gotten these codes (C1223 & C1249) 3 times over the past month-ish.

when I turn the engine off the codes reset. I was wondering if it could be the stop lamp assembly switch..? I was reading other posts and this is what I was able to pick up from those posts. I apologize, I get easily confused when posts go all over the place with what ifs... is the stop lamp assembly switch a good place to start? If so, is it easy to replace? I like to tinker but I am very novice....

Possibly. Are you getting VSC/Trac lights without a CEL when it throws the codes? Do the lights turn on only after the brake pedal is depressed? Are all tail lights working?

If yes to the above, then it may well be the brake light switch. I had the same issue, replacing the $15 switch fixed the problem.

Yes. VSC/Trac lights come on which prompts me to check the codes. It usually happens when I'm "riding the brake' either in slow traffic or high pedestrian areas. at least that's what I've noticed. once it comes on it stays on until I shut the engine off.... I will start with checking my break lights. I just replaced my front turn signal.... maybe the break lights are out?

Upon inspecting my old switch, I could not see anything physically wrong with it. No corrosion on the contact surfaces, plenty of resistance in the spring... no clue. If it weren't throwing the dash lights I'd never guess anything was wrong with it.

Yes. I believe that is what Ali said when he removed my old one... it looked perfectly fine. No corrosion or other detectable physical issues....

See if the following applies to your issue, copy/pasted from the link I included previously:

I'm suspecting that possibly the main issue here may be the stop lamp switch circuit, but I am not 100% certain at the moment without being able to look at TIS for more information regarding the DTCs as well as testing the vehicle myself. If you can, please try the follow:

1.) IF the lights do go out when you cycle the key, please start the vehicle and do not touch the brake pedal at all.

2.) IF the lights do not turn back on after waiting a few minutes, THEN step on the brake pedal as if you were to shift out of gear.

3.) IF the lights still do not turn on after you depress the brake pedal please drive a short distance (about 5-10ft should be enough).

My brake lights are LED so they are not burned out and do not appear be faulty.

These are the codes that Ive been sporadically receiving.

C1223- ABS Control System Malfunction (General ABS Fault Code)
C1249- Open in Stop Light Switch Circuit

I took these steps found in another post. Sorry I'm on my phone so I'm not able to put link. But the link is posted above in another post on this thread.

1.) IF the lights do go out when you cycle the key, please start the vehicle and do not touch the brake pedal at all.

2.) IF the lights do not turn back on after waiting a few minutes, THEN step on the brake pedal as if you were to shift out of gear.

3.) IF the lights still do notturn on after you depress the brake pedal please drive a short distance (about 5-10ft should be enough).

I was not able to recreate the code through these steps... the code seems to come on when I'm needing to "ride the break". Such as slow traffic or going through a residential area. I guess my next step is to purchase a stop light switch.

If anyone has a good link for instructions to replace this part can you please post it. I have not been very successful trying to find good replacement instructions and/or video.

That video walks you through it. It is a very simple job, and takes less than a minute to replace. I am almost 100% certain this will solve your problem.

Ok. The new part came on Wednesday and I just put it in. Other than boobs getting in the way, it was pretty easy. The old part was a bit more difficult to get out. Hand strength is my downfall. I had to "wrench" it out. The new part popped right in. No issue. Went for a test drive around the block. I rode the brakes and did a hard stop. Code didn't come on. Everything seemed to be working 100%. Hopefully this fixes that issue. :)

I got a C1223 C1249 and a B1152 (passenger air bag circuit malfunction) all at the same after a long trip pulling my camper (plugged in with camper brake light connector and a brake controller).

I followed this process as outlined earlier in this post and nothing happened. What am I missing?

My vehicle does not seem to be running any differently. What is the actual effect of these codes on the driveability/safety of the vehicle?

Replacing brake switch (with an OEM) did not solve my C1223 C1249.
