Help with HEAD UNIT 2005 4Runner SE Factory stereo non-RDS

Hi everyone,

I have a 2005 4Runner and I still have the factory stereo which, according to what I've read online has no RDS, which seems right. Anyway, I want to order a double DIN and I have no idea how to do any of this. I want to do it myself, and I am a fix-it handy smart guy and am willing to screw up. So if anyone can direct me to a site or something that shows you how to take apart the stuff that needs to be taken apart to access the double din stock-stereo and also what else might I need when ordering a double din receiver (with everything, nav, dvd, audio, bluetooth, etc).
I basically want to get the best double din for my money, but I really want it to have Garmin Navigation and a traffic receiver especially.
I want to know what parts I need exactly before I buy the unit itself because I really don't like returning items online. I'm very new to this but I can probably figure it out pretty quickly with some directions. I have read a lot on the forums and I understand I would need a mounting kit of some sort so that the new HU will sit properly since its clearly not made specifically for my type of car. I understand that this would include some metal brackets of some kind and a couple cable connectors. How on earth do I figure all this out? I have a feeling that Crutchfield would be the best way if I want to do it myself, but I really don't want to pay their super expensive prices for their HUs, at least the ones I'm looking at. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, thank you so much!!!

I have found that crutchfield.com is very helpful. They also have phone support that will help you pick out the right head unit for your needs. You can tell them (or the website) that you want a certain kind of unit (double-din, gps, etc) and they will narrow the choices for you. They also supply you with all of the equipment needed to mount your head unit in the specific model of car you have specified, as well as detailed instructions that many people on this forum have stated are well worth it. The guy I talked to on the phone mentioned that I would almost certainly be able to do the install myself.

I am looking at the pioneer 8000bt, but it seems like it has a few features that I don't really need. I am most likely going to wait a bit before I make my decision. If anybody has any advice or recommendations, I am only looking for a double-din with a good ipod interface. I don't have the steering wheel audio control stick in my car.

Gotcha.

In that case, crutchfield can still be useful. You can look at their in-dash gps options to find out what features are good and what gets high customer rankings.

Car Selector

This list shows that Kenwood in-dash units seem to have high ratings and garmin GPS compatibility. They also list a traffic receiver as an accessory. Crutchfield can be good for research, even when you don't want to buy from them.

Neel, this is the one I went with, as I didn't need integrated Nav either:
Kenwood DDX514 DVD receiver at Crutchfield.com

Has very good reviews there and on Amazon. I also added the Sirius module and ipod/iphone interface.

Thanks for that advice, but I am not really looking for a dvd receiver either, and that is a bit above my budget.

Thanks for the help though. I am probably going with the pioneer 8000bt. There are only a few non-dvd double-din units, and it seems like a good one.
