help with major overheating please

hi, if you have any information that can help please post it, i bought a 91 4runner v6 4x4 about a week ago, i have replace many parts on it so far, fuel filter, timing belt, water pump, intake gaskets, knock sensor, cam gaskets.

Now when i think i should have a good truck i am having it overheat in about 3 minutes of driving, and i mean readline hot, farthest it will go up, so i replace the thermostat, still happening, so did the waterpump and still, so i took the thermostate out and ran without it for now even though my haynes says its not a good idea, but i really have no clue what is going on, with it out the truck goes to half way tempature and no higher, i put it in and it don't seen to let any water into the engine, i have tested new and old one in hot water on stove and both open up, any help is much appriciated thanks

First thing is to make sure you have the right thermostat, and it may be worth trying one that opens up at a lower temp.

Have the radiator water checked for the presence of exhaust gases. The device goes on in place of the radiator cap and the test will tell you whether or not you have a blown head gasket. Do a cooling system flush.

flip the thermostat

2 things to try. Since it sounds like the problem is with the t-stat otherwise it should keep overheating even without it.

First: The t-stat may have been in backwards. It is possible to install it the wrong way in some vehicles. Check in a haynes manual.

Second: Check to see if the t-stat works (at your own risk). throw it in a pot of water and boil the water. Pull it out carefully with tongs or something so that you don't burn yourself and see if it's open. I do this with old and new t-stats because some of the cheaper ones don't work even when they're new (made in china).

The temperature should be etched on the t-stat and if you have a thermometer you can get a more exact reading.

I'm pretty sure that it will be in the range of 85 C to 95 C or something. I'm not sure what that is in fahrenheit.

i have a new and the old t-stat and have tested both in boiling water and both open, and have a haynes manual and am putting it in the right way, this thing has be turned upside down, i am going to go buy another t-stat and try it, but its weird, with it out the truck does not overhead cause there is constant water into the engine but with it in, it does not seem to let any water in at all, maybe the new and old one i have are faulty.
