Help with New purchase.

Guys,i am trying to purchase a Runner for my mom; she does lots o city driving.
I found a prospective 98 Limited 4x4 w/locker, but has 183K. water pump, timing belt done 2 years ago. guy is asking 6200, but i talk him down to 5800. i think its a good buy, but worry about how she will do as daily driver in city? long term. do you guys think its worth it.

If that is everything you are looking for, and at a price you think is fair, then just have it checked out. You should be able to find a reputable shop in your area that can do a compression test, or even better a leak down test, and just generally check the vehicle over for signs of damage, or shoddy repair work. The millage isn't bad its just more chance for maintenance to be skipped or not done properly.

Does she need 4WD? 2 Wheel would be less expensive to buy and less maintenance.

Thanks man, yeah i didn't think the mileage too bad either maintenance looked pretty fair and vehicle in great condition. I will have her checked out though for a compression and leak down test. thanks again

Yeah she'll need it for the winter weather in NY. and my dad should be able to handle maintenance ( hes got a tundra)

2wd is really hard to find around here, and besides T case and front diff fluid change, what other maintanence is there?

CV axles, more specifically the boots. On an older truck if they haven't been done those boots will need replacing sooner or later. 2WD has less less going on underneath to have problems. If she doesn't need it, why pay for it. Obviously if she's in NY she'll need it. I guess I shouldn't have used the word "maintenance" maybe, less future expenses?
