Help with Painting!

Hey guys, I'm thinking about painting my tailguards flat black. Anyone know how to go about this? I'm guessing I cant paint them how they are now since the paint would just chip off. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is a picture of my guards in case you haven't seen them. Thanks guys.

You could paint them while they are on there, but you run the risk of getting over-spray from the paint on the body. Masking it off w/ painters tape and newspaper would definately help.

If you take them off, I just painted a chrome license plate frame glossy black to match my 4R. I started off w/ a black primer paint, and it pretty much looked flat black. The color was "hot rod primer". Just to be safe, I'd go w/ the primer and then a matte black to finish it off.

prepping is key. get some scuff pads from a paint store or hardware store. use the gray colored ones. make sure you take all the shine off the chrome.

I'd recommend an adhesion promoter before applying the spray paint. Bulldog makes a good product

For the topcoat, get a good quality enamel. They dry hard and are easy to get a good finish. Epoxys tend to be more finicky.

I couldn't tell ya.. I just got it painted today and im letting it sit for a few days to make sure the paint is completely dry before I put it on.

Like rook said, make sure you scuff up the chrome so the paint adheres better

I don't know if you ever got around to painting the guards, but I haven't had any problems with chipping on my license plate frame. It held up pretty well.
