Help with price on 2011 Limited

I'm considering trading my wife's 04 Sport Edition 4-runner for the 2011 Limited, we test drove it last weekend and my wife fell in love. I've tried to get competitive price quotes from 6 local dealers but NONE of them have any inventory and aren't moving much off MSRP.

I live in SLC, UT and there are 6 local dealers within 1/2 hour of me and the best price that I have gotten is $500 over invoice through Costco pricing. All of them are claiming that because of the Tsunami and limited supplies that they just can't go lower, is this legit or just a sales tactic?

Also wondering what others have paid for a Limited with NAV, I would be willing to travel and pick one up if I can find a better price.

Thanks!

I have a 2011 Limited with NAV and 3rd Row and paid 39,500 before service plans and warranties. Sticker was over 43k

That's more what I was thinking, right now with just NAV the best quote I've gotten is 40.3, I know area has a lot to do with it, but I'm suprised that no dealers are willing to negotiate much, if at all.

Due to the Japan earthquake and tsunami in March, supply constraints has limited the number of Japanese cars exported, including the 4Runner. Thus with a limited supply of 4Runners, there is not much negotiating room, especially here in the western part of the U.S.

I walked out of the dealership 3 times during my negotiation. Each time they stopped me in the parking lot and would not let me leave. The manager eventually came out and said, what do I need to do to make this deal happen today? I told them 39.5 and he reluctantly approved it.
When I got to the finance manager, they tried, repeat, tried, to screw me around and make up for that loss with over-priced alarms, lojacks, maintenance plans and warranties (over 3.5k worth of crap). Be prepared to negotiate those items and your APR for a long while. In the end, I did get the 5 year maintenance and wrap-around warranty for around 1600...I'd have to check my invoice for specifics.
Bottom line- the earthquake and your location might affect your closing price, but keep at it and they will eventually need to get that truck off their lot.

Good luck!

Consider coming over to the Denver metro area. You might have better luck. From what I seen, there's a lot of inventory. One of the dealers in Colorado Springs seems to have been a great choice for a lot of people. Seems I paid 38.3 for my LTD w/ nav (no 3rd row).

I was surprised that the seemingly lame certificate from overstock.com actually worked. (after a couple of months working towards a deal, this certificate pushed me into the end zone in 2 days)

Good luck. Don't get discouraged, don't feel rushed and don't buy into this hype/bs about the production levels.

Thanks for the responses, of the 6 dealers here in UT that are close to me there are a total of 8 Limited's on the lots, if I can get invoice I'm going to be happy...

I paid 1300 under invoice(not sticker). If you go to consumer reports on the internet and pay $14 you can configure the vehicle you want and they get a quote within minutes from 3 dealers nearby your zip code .They also give you good tips on negotiating the deal. For me they all came back 1000 to 1300 below dealer invoice. Try to configure the vehicle as close to one that you have located.I saved about $4000 off sticker.I took the quote to a different dealer that had the vehicle I wanted and they matched the other dealers quote

I ordered my runner on May 30th, from my dealer, and it is expected to arrive on the 25th of July. I wanted something that hadn't been touched. It's in Vancouver at the moment and waiting to cross the country. I was quoted $3000 off the MSRP. I contacted 4 other dealers and they didn't really want to look into it.

Another dealer is trying to tell me now that invoice pricing is going up $450, he said this will be countrywide. Anyone else heard this? The best deal that I can get locally is $500 over invoice, not sure if that's worth it or if I should just wait until the end of the year?

Toyota usually give some notice of in year increases - he may be referring however to pricing on the 2012s that might have started to percolate down to the dealers. Either that or the dealer is lying - it's easy to tell - just check if his lips are moving.

STOP:

Do two things and do them right quick if you plan to buy soon:

1) Read CarBuyingTips.com in its entirety. It's a really poorly laid out and totally "un-elegant" website but you will learn a TON.

2) Spend the $39.99 and order the pricing info from Fighting Chance New Car Buying Guide - Avoid haggling for a new car. This is REALLY good info. Worth every penny and more. You will never look at car buying the same once you read this... seriously.

We did both before purchasing our 4Runner (from a dealer 500 miles away) and we paid about $1,600 less than MSRP and about $800 over invoice AND the dealer is delivering it to us free of charge (saving me a $400 plane ticket and $200 gas to go get it). Not bad given the current inventory situation getting the EXACT vehicle we wanted (color, trim, options, etc.) without anything we didn't want. There were literally less than 10 4Runner Trail models in the Western US that fit our criteria and we still got a good deal.

I'll never buy a car the same way again.

You can actually get everything you need in the package from FightingChance but the CarBuyingTips.com site is free and has a lot of good info too and they recommend FightingChance as well. Trust me - it is worth $39.99 to save hundreds, or even thousands on your purchase. We did the whole thing with a few phone calls and e-mails and had our deal done within about 36 hours.

The inventory issue will be cleared up shortly as Toyota is almost back to full production.

Sort of... They are getting back up toward full production (about 90% by July) but that will still leave a lag in inventory until they actually deliver those vehicles to dealers. Popular models such as Camry, Corolla, Prius, Tacoma, will be built and restocked first, while less popular selling models (like 4Runner) will lag behind (and need to make the trip from Japan still).

Everything I am reading says that September will be when inventory begins to improve for the more popular models. My own researching confirms this as I watch nationwide inventory numbers on the 4Runner dwindle - the week after we bought ours my cousin and his wife both bought 4Runners (SR5 and Limited) so although not as popular as some Toyota models they are still selling faster than supply is being replenished.

On a TRAIL model I would say that is the best you are gonna do right now since there are really only about 100 Trail Edition 4Runners in the US right now (according to Cars.com - I know EVERYTHING isn't on their site). But given the inventory levels of SR5 and Limited you may be able to do better than that.

Thanks for the advice guys, I've got a dealer quoting me 39.2 for a truck with 45 miles on it, the only problem is that my wife doesn't want silver! Man this is getting to be a major headache! But I think 39.2 is under invoice, so we'll see what we can do with this...

I've found a 4runner that was a managers demo, they claim the service manager is the only person who drove it, has 5k miles and they are willing to sell it for 37K...has NAV and a bunch of accessories, does this sound like a decent deal?
