Help With Rear Diff Breather Mod

While I sure appreciate the confidence from Kid and Canasas to perform this mod, I'm afraid it's just not practical. In the meantime sandcrawler's suggestion for the meet and greet is a good one. I did this once when I had the 4th Generation, and found it was pretty darn talented group of people.

I went with the filter because it was recommended for a high flow, zero back pressure, zero vacuum breather for my air lockers so it doesn't suck gear oil back up in the air lines when I unlock them.
This is the ARB Differential Breather Kit (170112) they recommend but most with air lockers just go the mini air breather when I did my research as it's cheaper and still gets high flow and always open.ARB also gives a good explanation of why we need to relocate our rear one regardless of the type of breather used in that link.

Wish you could buy from ARB directly. Went to their site and was only directed to dealers within my zip code. Went to their sites, but they don't list the Breather Kit. Probably just need to call and see if they can order it.

Found a supplier for the ARB Breather that also has the Extra Kit to connect 2 more assemblies.

Now, my question is: would it be prudent to vent the Transmission? I've scoured through the Repair Manual, but have not been able to identify a vent.
Also wanting to connect the Front Differential & E-Locker to this system but cannot seem to find the vents in the RP.
Guess I'll just have to crawl under and take a look near the tops of the assemblies.

Anyone got any pics?

Barring that any competent Off road/speed equipment/accessory shop should know what you are looking for as soon as you describe it to them. I imagine they do them as standard procedure with the amount of lift kits they install.

Copy and print the pertinent parts of this thread into a document for them to show what you are looking for.

You are wasting your time w/ front diff/ trans / transfer case. Toyota used to leave these somewhat low, but they're all routed pretty high in the 5th Gen 4runner.

All you need to worry about is the rear diff and e-locker.

You are wasting your time w/ front diff/ trans / transfer case. Toyota used to leave these somewhat low, but they're all routed pretty high in the 5th Gen 4runner.

All you need to worry about is the rear diff and e-locker.

Got my kit a few weeks back.
Finally getting around to installing it.
At least got the tubing routed from the rear diff to the engine comp on passenger side. Ran along the frame adjacent to the KDSS lines.
Just need to jack up the frame (flex the suspension) so I can make sure to leave enough slack.
Am using the ARB kit which has 4 ports. Will be venting both the Rear Diff & the Locker. Thought I would try and vent the Tranny and Front Diff, but discovered they are vented at a height above the front tire already, so will just leave those be.

After reading the horror stories about blown axle seals, etc. figure this is a very worthwhile mod to do. The vents in the front are pretty easy to keep an eye on, and mine look brand new after nearly 2 years of ownership. I can see how those rear ones could get clogged up, un-noticed.

I really like the ARB kit (although pretty expensive)....the quality and workmanship is great.

Did the ARB kit come with the unions needed to connect the hose to the diff? this question came up in my build thread and I didn't see any parts listed for that in the kit description. wasn't sure that the ARB 8mm hose works with the Toyota union either?

ARB gives you (4) 1/8" BSP male fittings with "shark-bite" female end to fit the tubing.

Just got through installing ARB Breather. The male fitting threaded into the Rear Diff just fine, cut the end of the tubing square and just pushed it into the fitting. It is not falling out in this century. Checked the Locker and it did not have the same fitting (much smaller tubing), but it was routed probably up to top of the tire height, so left it be.

Am happy with the outcome.

If you do a quick search of "Rear differential breather"there are a ton of explanations of what it is for. Your rear differential and locker on trail/pro are only one way "breathers" and are not relocated above the axle. This could potentially (although debated) create a vacuum allowing for water to get sucked in through the seals if your rear differential if cooled and submerged (i.e. Stream crossing after a long time off road).

Thanks I got all of that. I just thought there was a different "mini" breather separate from the ones already mentioned. Nevermind. lol I like the idea of running to the jack bay or tail light bay. I think the ARB kit is overpriced so am looking into different options. I have questions regarding the e-locker but will scour the threads again before asking.
