Help With Rear View Mirror Wires

This information might have been too late to help, but if you want to take a look its about hardwiring radar detectors.

Its been two years or so, but with mpotter's help on where the power and ground was I made myself an inviscord out of telephone wire, heat shrink tubes, and some crimp connectors/metal prongs all bought from Radio shack. By the way, my DIY invisicord still works great!

In this case after you fix everything, you might want to buy an invisicord. Or if you really like DIY, this is your opportunity to teach yourself how to solder. I don't remember which two colored wires I used for my invisicord, but do know that there is supposedly a matching pair with telephone cables + and -. Took me a while researching this to find out.

As for wiring and things electronic, I'll tell you about the first time I tried to make myself a invisicord. This was for a Tacoma, which wasn't mine. I didn't have the pinout for power and ground so I decided to just shoot blindly and plug it in and hope for the best. The tacoma had about 8 or so places to put the pins in, and on one of the tries I ended up blowing a fuse. BOOM! No AC, Check engine lights, Odometer wasn't working, power rearview mirror wasn't working, etc. Freaked me out. On top of that battery started to die and wouldn't crank. Not knowing what was going on since this was my first time blowing a fuse, I headed over to the auto parts place and guy said I needed a new battery. OK $100 some later, same problem. Guy said I might need an alternator. More money down the drain.... It wasn't until a couple days later and some searching over the Tacoma forums that I found out that I should check the fuse... Took a multimeter and checked. Found the fuse, replaced it for a couple $ and kept the blown one as a memento. The lesson I learned from this, always see if someone else has done something similar online. This is one reason why I like these forums. The tacoma site has plenty of info which I found right away and face palmed myself for not thinking of something so easy, and this 4Runner forum also has great info.

Wow, that sounds like quite an experience. Makes me feel a little better - haha. I read what I could find before starting, but I've obviously learned a lot more in this thread. After I get the current wiring mess fixed I'll have lots of good options to try. Will post an update once I get everything in working order. This site is great - I really appreciate all the help.

Dude. This is not a 70s car with just a hot wire and a negative ground. This is a sophisticated computerized beast. Cutting any old wire and then seeing what it affects is a sure way to burn out an ECM/ecu or start a fire. Get a wiring diagram and get a clue before doing any more on your own. I know tinkering is fun but it's going to cost you in the end.

Thanks for the useful post...

On a lighter note, on a 2012 TE w/ KDSS, the mirror connector has only 2 wires, blue (+) and white w/ black (GND). Wiring an Escort SmartRadar involved pushing in the appropriate wires into the back of the connector and securing with a plastic shim to hold tightly. 10 minutes total. Held up just fine over the last 2 weeks including some medium off-road work.

Wow, how in the world did all of that happen?! Looks like a badger was loose in your 4R for the night!

To anyone else thinking of wiring your detector to the mirror power supply may I recommend this:

Blendmount.com - MirrorTap Power Cords

I popped the black plastic conduit shield off, pressed in my 2 connectors pins, popped the shield back on and I was done, less than a minute and no carnage!
Which slots did you place the red/black in using the MirrorTap. I'm looking to install mine this week after failed attempts at hard-wiring. I'm also concerned that my V1 isn't working properly since I haven't been able to get it to work using the outlet plug either. My 4R is 2011 Limited with Navigation. I believe the plug is a single line with 5 slots. Wife has my truck today so can't run out and check.

Check the thread I linked to above. mpotter has pictures and shows which wire taps into which area.

As for the V1 or the cig lighter cord, one or both have a fuse built into them IIRC. I haven't been on a long road trip so I haven't used the V1 much. Your V1 not turning on might be a result of a blown fuse either in the cig cord or the V1 device itself.

I will take a look after work and post when I get home.
Westwind, Any luck taking a snapshot of your review mirror. I saw the same setup as Speare with the first two slots taken (blue+ and black/whiteGND). That leaves me with five open slots 3 - 7.

This helped me out too today, just wanted to mention it.

Thank you so much for the help, people like you make the world a better place =]
