Missing and Idle problems after HG job.

I just done a head gasket job on my 97 runner sr5 and when I got it back together it started right up but now Im haveing a problem when I start it it wont stay running on its own i have to keep feathering the gas peddle until it warms up it used to not give me this problem. The idle does not race up like it should when its cold like its used to do It has been sitting in my garage for about three months before I did the job. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks by the way it has 178,000 miles on it.

I don't think this is related to your HG issues at all. I had the same problem before my head gasket replacement and still occasionally have the issue. I believe your problem stems from the IAC.

It is not throwing any codes as of yet. I may take the throttle body off and clean it real good. and see if that helps.

Well it threw a code P0300,0302,0303 it seems to have a slight miss at idle but has very strong acceleration. I ran a bottle of lucas gas treatment in it cant really tell no difference in it. Drove it on a road trip about 225 miles ran it around 75 to 85 MPH didnt feel any miss until at idle. I put new plugs in it when I did the Head gasket job Denso dual electrode from the dealer. It still idles lower than it should when you first start it up. Before the head gasket blowing it ran like a top. Thanks for the help

please correct this timeline so it is clear:

1. truck has head gasket issue

2. you or mechanic fixes the head gasket issue
a. did you resurface the head, rebuild it or buy a refurbished one?

3. Now it does not idle correctly, lags when accelerating, IAC does not seem to be working because you have to feather the peddle to keep it alive at idle,

4. Now it is throwing codes P0300,0302,0303 and missing at idle.

>> It sounds to me that you are having head/gasket/top-end issues again. I am not the most knowledgeable but that is what it sounds like to me.

@ Brianemc2 if you read the first post you will know that I did the job and that the head gasket was blowen and no I did not have the head shaved I had them checked by a local machine shop that said they were fine the motor never over heated none as soon as the problem presented itself I shut it off and stop driving it. The engine will idle on its own now but it still dont idle up at cold start. Thanks Again

Any chance you can go back and edit your thread title to something along the lines of "cold start idle help" or something along those lines. Not trying to be a ****, I just hate when i'm trying to search for things and I end up missing half the **** i'm looking for because there's no mention of the topic in the thread title. Not to mention it makes it difficult for future members to find info which only leads to the same questions being asked over and over again. Thanks in advance.

I just had my head gasket done last month and I also had idle problems

After the dealer replaced the head gasket, my car would idle at 1600rpm once it got warmed up. If started cold, it would almost die right away. They told me that some coolant might have gotten into my intake manifold but it should clear itself up. after 300 miles, i brought it back cause it didn't clear itself up. The high idle means I can cruise down the street at 38mph, and was just not natural. They found that it was the IDLE CONTROL VALVE. They replace it and its back to normal. Cost with dealer labor and parts, $440. The part itself is $240.
