Not sure of answer to your question but yes a hemi has the plug in the center of combustion chamber and the chamber in the head has to be like half a split tennis ball and the piston doesn't have a flat top but goes up in that hollow chamber. So if thats what the V8 has then you may be right. .

Do you mean to say that the engines Dodge is advertising aren't hemis? Why aren't they?
Marketing gimmick is likely anyway. If I recall correctly, the hemi wasn't a particularly efficient combustion chamber in the first place and the 440 was supposed to be a much better street engine.

Chrysler's marketing people really pulled one off back in the day when they started using the Hemi name. People to this day think that Chrysler invented the hemispherical combustion chamber design!!! As for what constitutes a "real" Hemi, who knows. Nothing manufactured today will be identical to the engines made in the 60's, but if Chrysler wants to say their 2005 Jeep has a Hemi, by definition it kind of has to be true. It's all marketing BS to me...

The original Chrysler hemi had 426 in cubic displ. and was over 400 hp(measured differently back then).It is without a doubt the best engine ever built bar none. It was produced from 65-70 or 71 .It had a tremendous amount of torque and cleaned up the track beating all chev and fords. The 440 was good too but had 375 hp. A 440 with a six pak was just about as fast as the hemi. But the hemi was the engine to have not the 440. Ford had a hemi head to but not a production engine,Chev never had one I don't believe.The original engine has been reproduced and you can buy one complete for around 25 grand. So has the 440.
The new hemi from Chrysler does not have 426 in disp, and I think the hp is around 300. Its nothing like the original in perf,or hp or durability but does have the hemisperical heads. its all hipe although it it the most powerful engine they make or for that matter any other production V8. An original hemi car from the 60's restored will bring $150-200 grand and more and they are in demand .

Chrysler might not have been the first hemi, maybe the 1903 Welch was earlier. Welch was absorbed by GM sometime before 1910 and their design just went away. The hemi appeared in lots of places before Chrysler ever came to the scene. I think Chrysler's hemi is not a hemi because it has to pass smog tests. Great marketing!

Ford's Boss 429 was considered a hemi head engine. They didn't make very many but it was put in over a thousand production Mustangs from '69-70. FWIW they had a Boss 429 on the recent Muscle Car shootout aired on Speed Channel where it managed to beat out the Mopar Hemi for first place.

I had an original hemi challenger in my younger days. Sold it for a whopping $6500.
Kick myself everyday for selling it.

Hemis were tempermental. A lilttle off engine tune and they were not that impressive. A 440 or 383 would jump all over it.
Was a ego trip driving it though. Got alot of attention.
Sad to say, I will never have another. Way out of my league now. Sigghhhhh

Yes ,there was a hemi engine in the 50's and it was put in Desoto's Dodges,Chrysler 300 and so forth,it was high performance for the time .It is not the same hemi made in the 60's. The famous hemi made in the 60's was put in the muscle cars Chrysler made. Hey,, maybe your a Ford or Chevy guy ,they made performance cars too...thats what makes a horse race.,any car can win a race but the 60's hemi consistantly beat the competition at NASCAR.in the 60's. To my knowledge after the 60's muscle cars were gone nobody made a hemi head engine until the new Chrysler engine. Could be wrong but don't think so. There to expense to make and nobody was interested in high performance. Anyway this is a T4R site not a Chrysler board.
