Hercules All Country M/T Ironman

My buddy is a mechanic and has a set of these in 265/70R17 and before I put them on my 4runner, wanted to see if anyone has used them and what their experience was like.

This will be for going to Tahoe this winter and doing some off-roading (not rock crawling) for hunting and camping.

I had them on a rig that I purchase, I took them off after a week they were SO loud. 55 mph tops or I would go crazy.

Seemed like nice tires, they were purchased through Les Schwab.. but the howl was too much.

Was it the road noise, handling or both?

I had a set of Avalanches and it was noise, wet performance, sucked on ice................and was sh!tty on gas. I just won't buy the Hercules brand again any time soon, much better tires out there for a better price.

That sounds like all kinds of bad! What kind of tires would you recommend? The trade off is, because I'm in SF, fishing/hunting/camping is going to be a 2-3 hour drive...so I'll probably need something that is comfortable highway and trail ready.

There are lots of good brands and models to choose from but I currently run Kumho Road Venture AT51s and they are very reasonably priced, are quiet, perform well on the highway and good on back roads, under breaking, wet and dry and have been awesome in the snow & ice. I personally would buy them again unless one fails for no reason. Price and reviews were my criteria for buying them.
