First off, I have loved my 2008 V8 4WD 4Runner since day one. It is a great vehicle!
I did want to give people some realistic possibilities of high cost repairs that can occur so that others can be aware.
Here are a few high cost repairs that are somewhat common:
1. Seized 4wd actuator, use it or loose it as they say. This can easily cost $1500+
2. Air Conditioning, this is a HUGE job. Most shops charge 7-10 hours to replace this as usually the dash has to come out... Treat your AC nicely. Again, this can easily cost over $1100 for a full AC kit install
3. Rust, look it up
4. Secondary air injection pump failure, some people buy the bypass kits, but some have been too late and had to shell out $2000+. This is for V8 models only.
5. Timing belt/water pump on V8 with VVTI. Average price is $1000+ in my area without replacing the crank and cam seals.. I had quotes of $1800 to do the seals.
6. Head gasket issues on mostly pre 2005 V6 models.
7. The starter is in the valley of the engine if you ever need that replaced. They last for a long time, but again it is a pricy repair.
8. Cracked headers. This one is purely an annoyance, it doesn't really cause problems but it will make your beautiful beast sound like a jalopy. Doug Thorley headers are the go to but they start around $900 + 10 hours of labor to install.
Despite these large items, I still love driving my truck and don't plan on selling it. All vehicles have their pitfalls and the 4Runner is no different. Luckily, they will get you nearly anywhere you need to go! If anyone has different experiences, disagrees or wants to add anything feel free to let me know!
