Whats up everybody. New to this forum but not new to 4runners. I was just looking for peoples opinions on a couple of products. First, I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Jay and I am a student at UMD. I've got a 97 5spd sr5 with 207k on it and still running strong. Im planning to do the following within the next month or two:

change fluids- trans, diff, brake,coolant

replace timing belt and tensioner

and replace waterpump and maybe thermostat.

Basically I wanted to know what you experienced owners recommend for fluids and parts. If i'm forgetting an important service please let me know. What else would you guys do to a truck thats got over 200,000 miles on it. I plan on doing all the work myself so labor isnt an issue. Thanks in advance for all the help.

welcome to the forum!! good choice! did you get the rear locker in that one?

as you may already know, since you just bought one that these thigns are sweet and reliable, so the things you mentioned above are really about it!!

maybe plugs and the other basic tune up parts just so your on top of everything, other then that there really is nothing else to really worry about,as far as products are concerned toyota has a recommended list other wise it's really a preference thing, if you wanna talk about it pick one, oil,trans fluid, ect ect, to broad for one topic!

(there was a thread in the last day or 2 that has pdf manuals for the 3rd gens download and see what the other things are)

mostly the other things include stuff like checking the chassis bolts and such, stuff you could most likely run 600K on before you have a problem

maybe the prop shaft greasing and such maybe needed.... read the manual and see what you think needs to be done with all of that extra stuff.

Go thru it and you will have a great rig for a long time. this forum has tons of great info and people that can answer and help you with anything.

How do I know if its got the locker diff? Its a v6 4wd with a manual trans if that answers your question. Oh and this car has been in the family since 97, im just finally getting around to learning the ins and outs of this bad boy. Fluid wise, i was wondering what brands you would buy for the coolant, trans, brake and diff fluid. All synthetic of course. Are some better than others? I was planning on getting the belts,tensioners and waterpump from my dealer. Are there any reliable parts dealers online? I just want to learn as much as possible.

as far as brands go toyota has it's own coolant, i prefer to stick with that just cause it's OE others will tell you anybrand of coolant is pretty much good for it, just personal preference.

i'm not really comfortable saying use this oil!!! you know, i like amsoil and thats what i use in almost everything 'cept my aircooled vw, just read around and see what you like. sorry i can't be more clear

www.trdparts4U.com I believe is toyota of Dallas website and they offer members of most toyota boards a discount and ship lower 48. There is one or two more that are sponsors on some of the Toyota Forums also.

Use Toyota coolant. Everything else is pretty universal.

ATF is just Dex3, oil you can use anything, etc...

thanks for all the links! unfortunately i dont have the locking diff. why do people always talk about it? Im assuming it is helpful when on rough terrain.
