Just wanted to say hi! My name is Rich. I just purchased a 2000 Toyota 4Runner Limited yesterday. It has 95,000 miles and I paid $5,500 Cash for it. It was dealer maintained since new! I've been looking to get into one for the past year and hadn't seen any great deals. The only problem is the back window will not roll down with the console switch. Maybe disconnected?


I love to mod cars and have already blacked out the grill and smoked the tails. Deckplate mod is also done! This site has a great wealth of information! Thank you.

I couldn't believe it. I was expecting to find something seriously wrong with it but could only find minor scratches and the window switch... While I was test driving it the guy got at least 10 calls. I'm so glad I don't need to sit on craigslist all the time looking for a new whip :ybrick:

Regarding your rear window if you haven't figured it out: Does your rear defrost and the ECT button still work? When i bought mine the rear defroster didn't work, so i replaced the switch... ONE switch contains all of these functions! and you cannot replace one or the other. It cost me like $112 if i remember correctly so... good luck, I'm somewhat close to Portland, so if you need some help let me know.

I figured it out. The window goes down the the key fob and the key in the back hatch so I check to see if the switch was plugged in. I popped off the trim and found that it was just unplugged. I plugged it in and now have a rear defroster, ECT & the window goes up and down :]

I do have one problem with the runner. Last night the CEL poped up and the code read P0420 :/ I guess my cat is gone? I can really feel the loss of power when the code comes back on after reseting it. I DO have a cali runner so that means I have 2 cats correct? Do both need to be replaced?
 
Found this online for the P0420 code...

Causes
  • Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for (not likely)
  • An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
  • The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
  • Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
  • Re****ed spark timing
  • The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings
Possible Solutions
  • Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.
  • Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).
  • Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2), replace if necessary
  • Replace the catalytic converter
Hope this helps you a little. I replaced my Front O2 and all is well (this was two years ago, so I don't have P/N's handy).
ONLY USE DENSO IF YOU REPLACE THESE 02's

I'm down in Eugene and just got a 97 with 131k for $6k- I used to have a black 97 a few years back and it's the best rig I've owned. Very proud to own one again :)

did you end up fixing your truck?? i would start with your cat before you do anything. there is a reason why that code is coming up. thats what your computer is for. your cat is not doing its job. if its clogged it can make your car run bad make your cat run really hot. i have seen them get glowing red before. i have also seen them make a vehicle run really bad. i know they are expensive but start with that before you try guessing what it is. if you need help with parts i can help you. i run a local shop here in town and can probably find a better deal on a good one. and nate is right if you ever replace a oxygen sensor ONLY USE DENSO NOTHING ELSE. for some reason they work the best on toyotas.

Haha, no way man, you beat me to it - by nearly year! I'm from Portland as well, been looking to buy for some time but I probably won't get a steal like this! Ah well, more time to mod research here before I buy.

Congrats on that awesome find Rich. I just picked up a 2000 SR5 runner last week here in Greensboro, NC. Only issue with mine is we have to replace the driver side valve cover. Was going to do the work this weekend, but was way too cold. Gonna try this coming weekend.......I Love Portland (miss it) lived there (Beaverton) from 2000-2001.
