Hey guys, have 4 hours to make the decision on 2000 4Runner

I am rather new on this forum, and have been wrenching on a 2000 limited 4x4 since Nov 2015. I paid the same amount with 198K, day old Coopers, and very clean. I have had no regrets to date, and my 16 year old daughter hugs me daily thanking me for buying her the coolest vehicle amongst her friend group.

Another reason I'll offer why this is a great deal. It is a SR5.
Leather seats suck in the Lmited. Knowing what I know now, I would avoid this on any future 3rd Gen I buy, and I plan on getting another for my son.
Also, I am not 100% certain, but I know with my Limited, it has anti theft feature. I need additional keys, and to get them with only a valet key, I am looking at several hundreds of dollars to either replace the ECU, or have the existing reflashed. It is an expense I am regretting.
I am of the understanding that the SR5 package does not have this issue. I might be wrong, but certainly something to be aware.

I'd definitely go for it, but not sure I'm willing to take the gamble on a 220k car without a proper inspection! that's awesome, sounds like you got a kickass deal!!!

Automatic 2000 4Runner 4x4 Fully Loaded

this is one I saw the other day. talked to owner, family owned it's entire life. looks clean. however, 220k miles. too much $ for the miles? and in general, should I stay away from one with that many miles? it IS 4wd, however. looks like timing belt and water pump were done at 186 too.

Mileage has nothing to do with these rigs. It's how they're maintained and how they were driven. These rigs will go over 500K no problem. Many of us on here have 300plus with no plans of trading them in or selling them. Just keep in mind, the higher the mileage, the lower the price. That's your bargaining chip. Knock off $500 if the TB/WP hasn't been done.

There's just some basic things you need to do such as TB/WP, LBJ's, radiator/cooler, bushings. Then like any older vehicle there's the plugs, wires, MAF, O2 sensors, fuel filter and you're pretty much set.

talked to the dude again and he doesn't want anyone taking it to a mechanic to have it looked at. "it's a 4Runner, its in good condition and we just had the smog done so we know it's fine." damn. that's a pain. at 220k a pre purchase inspection I would think is a good idea.

yeah, honestly I can do my own brakes and change the oil but beyond that I don't know much about cars. sounds like a red flag to me, or the dude is just a dick. either way I'll walk and be patient.

good to know. I was previously only looking at ones with 150k or less. that should help widen the search a bit. thanks!

Like RR says, all of those items are within the capability of a DIY. The only item I have heartburn over is the TB/WP. All other items are pretty simple.

Think of a topic, search t, read it, and be educated. Pretty much that simple on the forum.

Coming from a BMW here and am sick of bottoming out and likely ruining my suspension on rough dirt roads when going camping. Plus i want a car I can sleep in (4runner). 3 series isn't cutting it. Here's the link:

Anyways I have been looking for a week or two now and found a 2000 black 4Runner 2x4 (would like 4x4 just in case but seems hard to find) and the truck has 126,000 miles. the low miles is more important to me than finding 4x4.

as for the shape, it's in excellent condition. owned by an older man, well-taken care of it seems.

My main questions -

Is this a good deal? (SR5, interior spotless, exterior excellent) - I got them down to $9,500 out the door after tax and license. was posted for 9,000. am I simply paying too much for a 16 year old car? these things no matter where I look seem to still be holding their value and are selling for at least 7k.

can I expect to still get 7 or 8k out of this car if I decided to sell it? I mean I would think it's for the most part past the point of depreciation at this point. my BMW is only worth 15 and probably falling faster than I'd like, so a big part of this is having a car I can unload in a few years for more than 5 or 6k (if I wanted to, though I'd likely keep).

is this a pretty reliable truck? my buddy has a 99 with 208k and seems great.

thoughts? anything else I should look for when taking it in for pre purchase inspection? thanks all!!!

$9000 for 2wd is insane & no resale value. Look in the classifieds here there are nice trucks going for 5-6K

My Base model has anti-theft & you can get leather on an SR5. It all depends on what the original owner bought from the showroom or ordered from the factory.

agreed! once I get one I will definitely do DIY stuff. I do it on my BMW and they're surprisingly easy to work on! its fun too, with some beer :rofl:

With the price difference between the $9000 2WD and the $5500 SR5 you could pay someone to replace the transmission and engine if you had to. I'd go for the white one. I think it will sell fast.

That does seem steep for one that is 4x2. I picked one up last weak with 99k miles spotless as well for $4700. I think if you are patient you can find something a bit better and hopefully 4x4

No way would I pay 9k for a 2wd sr5 no matter how clean. If I had 9k to drop on a 4Runner I would buy a 5k 4WD and do 4K worth of maintenance/mods on it.
