Hey guys, have 4 hours to make the decision on 2000 4Runner

If I were looking today I'd keep an eye out for a truck with new front end parts in it. By now they all need bushings and such and they're not cheap to install.

Same here but I started with a 2002 Sport Edition but 2WD then when I moved to the mountains I got the 4x4 and never knew how much fun I was missing. Even if you don't use it too much it will get you more when it's resale time.

Rather than start a new thread, thought I'd ask you guys.

would you buy a 4runner that's salvaged? found one that's a 2002, 94k, 4wd, ($7800) looks like it's in excellent shape. said there was a minor collision, pass fender/bumper replaced. I'd plan on keeping this for good (eventually as a side car) so would the salvage be something I should worry about? assuming frame isn't bent or anything?

is somewhat expensive, but again the miles are nothing. thanks!

Cars don't get salvage titles for minor damage. It's possible it was repaired properly and will never be an issue, but I'd be very leery. Then there's also the fact that the resale value takes a serious hit because of the salvage title.

The only way for you to tell if the frame is ok is to put it on an alignment rack and see if everything is dialed in. That's a lot of money for a 15 year old vehicle with a salvaged title. Personally I'd keep looking.

LOL salvage title for a minor fender bender. I don't think so. On top of that, trying to get $7800 for it is insane. I would run from that seller and not look back.

Looks like a well maintained high miler. Can't beat the newer tires, 4wd, and leather for that money. That color combo is sweet, too. I could live with the knick in the bumper personally if I got the right deal. Definitely go look at it, but pitch a fit in front of the salesman about the miles and try to get him to come down some. It also shows 244k, not 206 in the pic.

that's a great price for the one pictured, not the one described, IF you're lucky and pushy, GET that one that's pictured for THAT price listed, and RUN... I got lucky on mine, dealer posted 1k lower than when I called and changed the add after, but got that price locked in, don't think I would have bought it otherwise...

even the VIN's don't match lol
 
IF you want to go for a drive...

1999 toyota 4runner limited 4x4 $4k with 256k miles, recent TB (value @ 250, unless WP was replaced too then $500) and rear end rebuilt last year (this could be a $1200 job with local shops or $1700+ from dealer)

If it makes you feel better I'm going to look at a 93 RX-7 for $20k. My first choice was the Porsche 993 Turbo but the market for those is ridiculous. Can't find a stick turbo MKIV Supra for under $30k. That's the price you pay if you want desirable old cars I guess..

Don't get it from a dealer if possible to save some money, have your mechanic look at it before completing the purchase, be patient, look for maintenance records on toyotaowners.com and carfax.com via VIN or plate number, go for a 4x4 with e-locker, low mileage is a plus but not necessary, be prepared to spend another $2-3K on maintenance for stuff that was neglected, DIY when possible to save money and to learn about your truck by reading extensive builds on here and youtube videos posted, go for OEM stuff and not cheap aftermarket, check the belly of vehicle for extensive rust or frame rot are a few off the top of my head. Good Luck and BE PATIENT!
 
I strongly suggest actively watching CL for private party. If you know how to evaluate cars strong deals are out there.
I just purchased a nearly exact copy of the 4runner that was the subject of the initial post. 2000 (silver), 4x2, SR5, original owner, 4.3L, 135K miles, well maintained and perfect interior and exterior. When I say perfect I am not exaggerating. I am very particular about my vehicles. The only issues with the entire vehicle is a dime size dent on the right upright on the rear hatch and the drivers floor mat heel area is worn through. Purchased for $5K. Took it to my best friend (20 year professional detailer) to make it perfect and he offered me $7K so that he could sell it to one of his clients for who was looking for this exact vehicle for $10K.
The key is to always be checking CL and be ready with cash to close the deal.
