Hey V8 guys! Budget CAI found:) $70.00

After spending hours searching the web for an inexpensive intake for my 4Runner, all that I ended up finding were $250-$300 systems. Yeah, not gonna happen on my poor college student budget:/ So I asked myself, What other vehicles did Toyota use the 4.7 V8 for? Tundras, Land Crusers, and Sequoias.. So, I looked up CAI's for those vehicles, and found just what I was looking for Here's the link: TOYOTA SEQUOIA SR5 4.7 4.7L V8 COLD AIR INTAKE 00-04 Y: eBay Motors (item 280530061852 end time Aug-03-10 13:48:31 PDT)

I ordered it last Thursday, got it today, and spent tonight installing it. My only concern before ordering was that the intake might hit the overflow bottle, but it actually clears it pretty well. However, I did have to modify a couple small things to make it fit just right.. I'll get pics up tomorrow of the small modifications I did as well as pictures of the system fully installed, and prob edit a lot of this being that it's really late and i'm a little out of it..

That all sounds good, and definitely put up some pics, but any system that's that cheap I would at least invest in a quality filter at some point. Who knows what kind of junk filter they proide with a system that's only $70.

Also can you give a sound verdict too? Usually intakes that tap right into the engine bay sound pretty throaty...

Definately agree with you there.. I was going to say that in my post, but like I said.. I was really tired. The filter that comes with the kit isn't completely garbage, but I'm def going to order an AEM dry-flow for it as soon as I can swing some more cash that way.. I think they're like $50

As far as sound.. I can't here it at all unless i'm at or close to wot, and if the engine is under a lot of load. But, in those conditions it's pretty throaty

Haha pics up! Oh and just so you guys know, I'm NOT completely finished with the install quite yet.. I still need to seal off the box to the firewall with a piece of sheet metal, and seal off the top of that to the hood so that it will actually be a COLD air intake I'll get pics up again as soon as I get finished with that..

I've always wanted to add an intake but did not want to ruin the OEM ducting system that allows the vehicle to go through deeper water by drawing air from the inner wheel well. I just installed a TRD drop in.

I've been through some very deep water on trails. Also, my wife uses the vehicle to go to work and where her job is located there is no drainage. When there is a bad rain storm - flash flooding (Couple times a year) she can only get through with the truck. She even uses the air suspension on high.

I'm confused, the CAI moves the air intake HIGHER than stock, not lower?
I guess water could/would splash up there more w/o a sealed box, but you can actually go through deeper water w/a CAI, just maybe not as fast!

When you wade through deep water you want to maintain enough speed to create a bow wave, which puts the wheel well in a pocket of air.

You can kind of see it in that picture. The water level at the wheel is much lower than at the front. You can go deep enough to put water over the hood but still be sucking in air.

My truck is a daily driver so I don't purposely go in water that deep. A bigger concern is long term clogging of the filter with mud and water.

Never thought of it that way. I gues you better keep moving! I still say if you were moving fast enough to create that air pocket, there will also be a pocket under the hood. Not to mention if you stop in water deep enough to suck in the fender intake, you might still be ok w/ the CAI. I agree that mud/water is more of a concern w/ the CAI, but for water depth, the higher intake the better. Just my opinion.
