I have been longing for a V8 4x4 4Runner for months now.
It will be a second vehicle, but basically my main vehicle as my car is to impractical.

I was also considering a GX470 only for some of the creature comforts, but not sold on how tall it is or the swing gate, also not sure if anyone here is aware but they are having an issue with the rear drive shaft clunking.

Do 4Runners have a clunk issue in the rear end when you let off the brake after a stop and just begin to move??

I have not felt this in the few I have test driven yet.

Thanks all !!:p

Not quite sure what you're referring to, unless it's the drive shaft binding when not greased properly. That's the only issue that I can recall being discussed here.

And, welcome to the board!

I know what you are talking about and the 4Runners do have it as well. I don't know what causes it, but it feels like a car hit you in the rear bumper. My 2003 had it as well as my 2005.

This can occur if the slip yokes in the driveshafts aren't lubricated regularly and bind. My '98 4Runner did this, as did my '03. In both cases, liberally lubing the slip yokes with NGLI-2 grease containing molybdenum disulfide cured the problem.

The slip yokes need to be lubricated with each oil change. It's a bit of a PITA to do it, as the truck has to be jacked up with all wheels off the floor so the drive shafts can be rotated to provide access to the grease fittings. Because of this, I suspect a lot of trucks don't get this Toyota-recommended maintenance.

This is only an issue with 4WD vehicles, BTW.

I think the GX has the swing gate because it is taller and could not swing up in some garages. My 4Runner gate is 1" from hitting my garage door.

I'd take the GX (for may reasons) if I had a choice. The GX has more features and comforts. For the price, I'd also look for a pre-owned Land Cruiser/LX.

Lexus has the best quality and service in the industry. Longer warranty than Toyota.

The 4Runner fit my budget (or lack of).

My 4Runner does not clunk. I do all maintenance myself. It is done correctly.

Getting all 4 wheels off the ground does sound like a PITA just to lube the driveshaft.

I've never had to do this though as I have a flexible hose on my grease gun and can access the fittings just fine. Mine came with the gun but you can buy them separately for about $8.

ditto. I just slide under from the passenger side with all 4 wheels on the ground. If the drive shafts need to be moved to get to the fittings, I just roll it back a foot or two then get it again. no lift needed. with the flexible tube, I can access all the fittings that are on and in the joints of the drive shafts with no trouble at all.
