Hi-Lift Advice

Hey all,

I am considering to get a Hi-Lift with base. A few quick starter questions:

1. How high should I get it?? 36", 48" or 60"?

2. I assume that CAST is better than Stamped steel...since the price is almost doubled with cast. Considering that Cast Hi-Lift can lift more weight and my G weighs over 5500 lbs, i will probably get cast. Is this correct thinking?

Thanks in advance.

Thai,
I've had my 48" cast one for quite a while and have been lucky to never have used it. I definitely would get at least the 48". Some people say to get the largest you can afford but at the same time I've found that unless you have a lifted rig the 60" can be overkill. Just my opinion.

Where on the vehicle will you be lifting it, they sell a adapter to lift it at the wheels. The best set-up I had seen was with the combination with sliders.

I have Hanna Quality sliders where I can lift it. I also have an adapter that fits the round tubes and makes it more secure.

My logic on getting the longest hi-lift was

a) in mud you might need the extra length
b) future suspension mods might benefit a higher lift
c) you might end up on a trail with friends who have higher trucks and need a high lift - what a bonus when you can come to the rescue and get things rolling quickly!

I believe you can also use the hi-lift as a pulling winch but I can't say its a benefit I would of thought of in the buying process.

And yes, the adaptor works killer!

Get yourself a wider base plate too for soft sand/mud applications. They are about three times the area of the standard base and are made of a tough plastic to withstand heavy lifting applications.

If you do get the longest hi-lift note that the standard hi-lift cover bag does not fit well despite it saying that it will fit. I cut the top off mine and extended it by 10" to make it cover the whole length. This was just a test. Now my wife is making me another bag with a few design improvements.

Another consideration is where you intend to mount it. I know some people buy shorter lifts to fit horizontally in a carrier at the rear (or the front) of the truck. I carry mine on the roof using the Yak. Mighty Mounts.

I find I have to remove the baseplate to stop the rattling sound it makes when travelling over even minor bumps. This in part is why we are designing the cover - to eliminate the rattles - which include not only the base plate but the handle too.

Cheers
Mark
