Hi Lift Jack Idea

If I would have though of this when I had my 4runner i probably would have done it.

This is however on my discovery. Feel free to delete this thead, but I hang around here because you guys are always comeing up with great mods that can be done on other vehicles.

Im still new to this discovery and sadly am unemployed so I gotta work with what I have.. BUT I love this idea, wether or not I had the money. [Well Id have a new bumper if I had the money.]

In my bumper it uses the stock holes that were already there other wise I would mount the holes a little wider. And I might put a third near the heavier side. Originally I wanted to do something more like a rack. And I still might but for now it only cost me 3.00 in parts.

The defender guys do the same thing, but not in this country, unfortunatley disco bumpers are expensive, so expensive it may be cheaper getting a used ARB.

Really I never saw anyone do this. I saw a few jeeps guys mount them on the hood and a few people put them on the spare tire.

But no I wasn't saying to go out and buy a discovery bumper. Im saying this can be done with ANY bumper. Front or Rear [Id do rear or 4runner]

Only requires drilling two holes. However I would go a little further and make/buy two brackets that will support the weight.

I think that's a good mounting location, much better than the silly hood mounts you see on a lot of vehicles. Only drawback is that it's going to get really, really dirty there, so if it were mine I'd want some kind of cover on it.

I have my hi-lift mounted on the rear bumper. I have a WAAG rear bumper guard, and the Surco roof rack mounting brackets made for the hi-lift fit over the bumper guard perfectly. It will not get as dirty in the rear, plus not as much as a safety hazard should you plow into somebody.

thats a great idea.

Only thing im worried about with mine is it rubbing the bumper. However if I used longer bolts and a nut as a spacer it might fix that. But then there is more offset weight.

If it was vertical like yours would be perfect.

There is no rubbing on mine. I used 3 1/2 inch bolts. I then put 2 nuts on the bottom to see them to the bumper brackets, 2 nuts higher up to adjust the heigth and keep the jack off of the bumper. On top of that I placed 2 flat washers, then the jack, 2 more flat washers, and then the wing nuts. Nothing rubs or wiggles around. I used good grade bolts to prevent breakage and rusting.

Will the hood still open without removal of the jack? I'm thinking yes but can you verify?

Not at all, Ron. I kind of modified that idea from one I saw and met in Co. I can't remember if it was CSL, or Shon. It was someone from here I met on a trail out there.

On my setup, I do have to remove the jack to open the hood. There is just enough of a clearance issue to necessitate removal. I like it, though. It rides really well.
On an unrelated note, I've been kicking around the idea of adding Lamorghinni door kits as well. For those tight spaces in between rocks, hills, and in deep mud pits. You know, so you don't have to do the Dukes of Hazards thing when you don't have enough rooom to open the doors.

I am going to mess with this a bit myself this long weekend. Seems like it could bump forward just a bit more to clear the hood. I will take the pics to my Ace Hardware dudes- I bet they can sell me something to work and just subtly improve on the fit. Has to have room for my Firestik mounted to the lower part of the ARB to not get in the way... hmmmm

yeah I do think it was one of the Glen(s) runs his Hi Lift like that- not sure if it is CSL or Yoshida.

Not feeling it on the Lambo doors Shawn. For one thing the wiring will need extra give/length to extend that far upwards if you catch my drift...not saying it can't be done....

Yeah, it's got to be CSL. Yoshida is running that Armorology on his. I just went outside and looked at the bumper. The only other way I can see of doing it would be to weld 2 pieces of all thread on top of the wrap around angle iron. Possibly, you could have a z shaped bracket made. The jack only needs to move forward about an inch and a half for the hood to clear.

I used 4" long 3/8 inch bolts with 9/16 heads
