HID Fog Lights

I have read and learned alot from this site,so here is my next question. On a clear night hid lighting is fine but do say 6000k fog lights pose a safety risk? Seems that in a high fog area you would want something a little more yellowish? Also is a halogen projector different from a hid projector? Well, both Projector lamps use this kind of lense:

Usually, they should be fine for driving at night, as long as they're set up correctly. This video covers general installation pretty well. Just make sure your's are angled to light the ground in front of you, so you're not blinding everybody you drive by.

Those bottom bulbs look like silverstars other then xenons?

Those bottom bulbs are not HID bulbs. They're just slapping the 'Xenon' name on them and tinting the bulb blue-ish.

i'll be following this thread as i just ordered some philips 4300k low beams HIDs and intend to do my first HID mod on the low beams. As for fogs i believe the best HID is 3000k, but these are really yellow - doesnt look so great IMO. Im going to see how mine turn out and if i like the look i may put in some 4300k or 4000k fogs.Im guessing 6000k would be terrible in real fog but great for aesthetics lol.

Chaos do you know what you need to do with ya HIDs when you for an inspection? Do you have to put in the factory bulbs or will you pass with modded HIDs?

You may get a break, and pass, or, if you "know a guy," : , you could talk to him. If you replace the housings for HID's, and keep them at a white temperature, you're fine. Over on Chevy Truck World, they used this example:

Nope, I'm a State Inspector... What is Legal by the DPS, Might not be Legal by your Local PD... For example, If all your seat belts work, then your truck passes inspection... EVEN IF YOU DONT HAVE SEATS!!!! Now, Its illegal to drive around with out any seats by Local PD...

Put it this way, ITS ILLEGAL To install HIDs in Housings Intended for something else (Halogen Housings)... Only DOT approved HID after Market housings are the Ones Make by Osarm (Xenarc) and the TYC projectors that are made for HID...

O, And your headlight Temp cant be any Cooler than White... 8k and 12k Kits I dont pass...

If you passed with 8k or even 12k, Chances are your Inspector gave you a break... Also, Clear Corners, Dont pass...

These are rules specific to TX, although they are pretty general, so check your laws, too.

Interesting, may be easier just to pop in the regular bulbs for inspection. I did speak to a NJ dealer parts guy he said they only check for check engine lights and emissions now, but who knows if he knows what he is talking abt. 4300k is a stock color and my 2006 has halogen projectors that look ok, i guess it cd be hit and miss how it goes.

I have recently installed some Kensun 6000K in my low beams using factory housings and they appear a little blueish. The kid down the street has 10000K and are really blue. Maybe 5000k might be closer to white. trying to get the best recommendations for the fogs. I live in eastern Houston and it does get foggy from time to time. Also any recommendations on aftermarket housing? Is halogen projectors different then hid projectors.

flnycus, yes state inspection only plugs into the port & and checks emissions in nj now, but they have increased spot checks with mobil inspection units in certain parts, & yes they do a fairly thorough check for things like HID installs, etc.

Remember, though, to switch the housings (if you're changing them in the first place, that is.)

From what I understand, it is your right to refuse those inspections without a warrant.

Yes halogen projectors are different than HID projectors. And no I wouldn't recommend 6,000K lights because they're approaching the blue spectrum where the usable light output drops off. I run 3,000K HID's in my fog lights.

Now that is more the answer that I was looking for. Maybe unpopular to have a yellow tint to hids but safety should come first.:thanks:

njshadow, sorry i dont think a warrant has anything to do with a roadside vec. inspection. State of New Jersey - Motor Vehicle Commission from link-- Despite this elimination of mechanical inspections, law enforcement may still cite a motorist for equipment out of compliance or failure to make repairs. MVC Mobile Inspection Teams will continue to regularly assist state and local law enforcement in conducting random vehicle inspections statewide. Vehicles that fail an inspection for mechanical defects prior to the start of the August 1 changes will still require repair and a re-inspection in order to obtain a valid inspection sticker.

I mean, I don't think they can tell you to open your hood to look for HID ballasts or aftermarket modifications without your consent. I'm sure they can cite you for obvious things like 40" tires or tints, though.

well all i can say is they have em right around the corner from me, the driver must get out of the vec. the entire exhaust system is checked for leaks, so is the gas cap. they get in & start with the switches, then open the hood & check the engine bay for fumes & while they're at it, illegal intakes, etc. ive even seen em do the old sheet of white paper trick to see if the headlight color is too blue. when i went to the state station they checked under the hood so why cant they roadside, & if thats not bad enough, the cops are right there to write a ticket if they want for things like cracked windshields & taillight lenses, or almost anything else they might want to. now the trunk im not sure about . not that i have anything to hide but i just hope neither of us will have to go through it, only time will tell. sorry to the OP for taking up space onyour thread

wowzers what is wrong with NJ! Well mine will be 4300k, hopefully it will be ok if that ever happens, i guess ill have to hide the ballasts so its not obvious or something Such a pain in the ass.
