HID for 2004 4Runner

I have a 2004 4Runner, and am looking at getting HID lights. I've done quite a bit of searching on here, but seem to be having trouble nailing down some information.

Instead of just asking 'what do I do', I'll try to get it down to a few specific questions:

1 - Is THIS what I should get?

2 - If I want to do my fog lights as well, I'll need two of those, can/should I install two sets?

3 - How difficult is this to install? I'm not an extremely mechanical person, but am not an idiot either. Last I read there was something about baking your headlights in the over???

1. the extreme kit is the lower priced kit, many have run them and I have not seen a post regarding a bad ballast. it will cost you more for phillips ballast hid kits.

2. you will need a second 9006 kit for the fogs.

3. you do not need to bake your headlight assembly unless you are retrofitting a projector lens into the existing housing. The kits are easy to install, you just make a few electrical connections
 
Where would I mount the ballasts and wiring? Steve said they had to be mounts within 1.5 feet of the lights, I'm concerned about mounting them under the vehicle...

For the headlight install, the ballasts will mount inside the engine compartment. If you search, one member has posetd a write-up with pictures showing where they were mounted.

For the fogs, you may need to get creative in mounting the ballasts. I racall one member who put in the 3k kit for fogs search a little and you will find it.

I'm a bit confused...

I'm putting these in a 2004 model, which does not have HID from the factory. That means that i don't have projector lamps, correct?

Aren't the kit that I'm looking at projector lamps - how do I not need to modify my existing headlights?

What am I missing?

hid kits/retrofit

the 2006+ years T4R's have a projector style headlight with a normal halopgen bulb. This is not HID lighting.With a projector it makes it easier to install a "HID kit" which basically replaces the bulb and you have to put the ballast in.

This if course is not street legal as these projectors were not made to house HID bulbs and have excess light beaming into oncoming traffic. Despite this many people do it with out too many problems


Our 2005- T4R's have a reflector housing which stil allows for a "HID kit" to be installed by switching the bulbs out, however yet again because these housings were not made for HID bulbs, excess light (way more excss light than a projector style housing) will be beaming into oncoming traffic.

I do not recommend HID kits for reflector housings, but to each his own.


For wither of the lighting types (projector/reflector) you can do a "HID retrofit". This is where you take a HID rated projeto (or otherwise) and install it in your OEM housing. This proves to be difficult for some as it requires taking apart your headlight.

If you are able to do this there are +'s and -'s to it. You will have true HID lighting and the beam cutoff will be exquisite but it will cost much more than just a kit.

Hope this post has been helpful and be careful driving if you are installing a kit and swapping out the bulbs... :-/
 
That's what I was thinking...

I found some old posts, and looks like I'd probably want to upgrade the whole thing.

That's not something that I'm going to feel comfortable with though, so I need to look at other options.

How much better are the Silver Star Ultras than stock lighting?
 
My recomendation would be to either go full retrofit (swaping HID projectors into your current headlight housing - requires baking and expertize), or you can buy the new 06+ projector lamps and get a H11 HID kit (what I did).

I wouldn't recomend doing a HID kit for 03-05 headlights because there is no way you can get rid of the glare to oncoming traffic.

They will fit, but you will need the little plastic pieces below the headlights replaced as well. Also there will be a small triangular gap on the innner corners due to the difference between the Grills.
