HID Head lights

Ok, a couple things:

I've only seen the one thread on here that has the picture of a 5th gen with HID, that's the thread that also has the visual walkthrough of the install. I've also seen another picture online somewhere of a 5th gen with HID lights.

The pictures I've seen don't seem to show that great of a cutoff.

However, there's is one thing conspicuously missing from all the photos I've seen here and elsewhere, before AND after shots. I don't know about you other guys, but when I switch out lights like that I'm sure as hell going to take before and after pictures.

So why are the 'before' photos mysteriously missing from the photos I've seen? Maybe I'm just missing them, but I'd like to see some good before and after shots, I'd want shots into the headlights and up against a wall at about 30 feet or so.

Maybe the HIDs would look better than I'm thinking in the stock housings, but I'll need to see some pictures.

Because people are pleased with the amount of increased headlight output they now have but don't want to admit that their lights now glare and their beam pattern has gone to crap
 
I'm pleased with my beam output, they do glare, beam pattern I could care less. I forgot to take a before picture, if you want a before, just go turn your headlights on lol. I'll get some head on pics.

Projector units create a very colorful cutoff band called diffraction due to the cutoff shield.

There have been speculations as to whether or not car manufacturers have intentionally equipped their cars with a distinct colored cutoff band to differentiate them from other vehicles.

I know I have a shi**y attitude about it. I'm saying about my own opinion, I don't care about a clean cutoff point. I know this is an inconvenience for other drivers, but come on even cars like the new escalade have projectors, their hids could melt someones face off.

Xiao Yue - You asked me why manufacturers choose to use projectors over reflective headlamps and my reply to you stated that I believed that one of the reasons manufacturers do this is to achieve a colourful cutoff band to differentiate their vehicles. Sticking a higher kelvin bulb in a reflective headlamp would alter the color output however decrease light output as you probably know.

You are incorrect about stating that people would not make a huge deal about the presence or absence of a colorful cutoff band. Take some time to see how many posts are out there about shield modifications to enhance the color band.

Second time in the same thread stating your self centered and don't care about your fellow drivers being blinded by your glaring lights does'nt help the HID in the reflector lens debate.:(

You are far from the only one who doesn't care as I can spot HIDs in the wrong reflector low beam lens every single day. Most of the time it's teenage kids who inherently are self centered,not responsible adults!

I have a set of Philips 5000k HID's that I took out of my 06 Sport with projector lenses. I put one in my 5th right low beam and compared it to the left with Halogen.To my eyes there WAS noticeably MORE glare in the right with the HID.You need to stand back to really notice it.

I put them in my fog lights which have a low wide beam pattern and I can control them with a switch . They are left off unless I need them.

If there's no traffic coming the other way then nobody will notice glare coming from the right lens either.

Then why not just bash someone in the rear if they're in your way and you're in a hurry..

OK then, let's see a side by side comparison. A Before and after would suffice as long as the pic was taken in the exact same spot at the same time each day - it wouldn't be exact but would be close enough for a fair comparison.

A side by side is even better, if someone has access to 2 4Runners, one with and one without.

A comparison to a Prius is pointless, so I wouldn't bother with that.

I'd be happy to meet up with someone here who has HID installed and do a side-by-side comparison with my stock 4Runner, just to get some good pictures up so that people can view the results and make their own decisions. I'm in the DFW area if anyone is interested.

I'm not inherently opposed to HID, I'm saying I don't know what they'd look like, and some compsrison pictures would help.

Well people keep complaining about how people using hids won't admit that their is a crappy beam pattern. I used the wrong choice of words when I said that. Im trying to say I don't care about the cutoff, from my point of view of driving. I know its an inconvenience for other drivers, I stated that already. But I also stated that their are some factory projectors that'll do 10 times worse of blinding than these plug and play hid kits. I don't do a whole lot of night driving, so don't worry guys.

Unless they are aimed improperly, or your car is lower than the other car that's equipped with oem hid projectors (i.e. accord vs escalade), then that's almost physically impossible as the internal cut off shield reduces the majority of the stray light above the cut off shield.

Give us an example of a properly aimed factory hid system that blinds more than a pnp hid kit.

I would say that the picture taker would have to make sure that the exposure setting be the same for both pictures, i.e. set to manual. If not, the difference in exposure setting could make one picture look advantageous over the other.

Also, a picture on a dark, unlit road would be the best. That way, viewers could judge for themselves the difference in light thrown above the "cut off line."
 
I've lined up with my 4th with another with HIDs. Basically, it's all relative. HIDs put out about 3x's the lumens of halogens. Halogen optics allow light to leak above (gare) the cut off for overhead sighns.

The glare is much more noticeable with HIDs in halogen optics because it's brighter.
