HID in Reflector...anyone have experience?

Hey everyone! I just joined here and I have seen some threads about HIDs with projectors but I wanted to see if anyone has just installed HIDs into their stock reflector headlights and what results they got. I recently bought some 9006 4300k HIDs and am planning to install them in the stock headlights, but if too much glare, I'll put them in my projector fogs. Any thoughts, suggestions?

anybody please correct me if i'm wrong but i think the first issue you would run into is heat buildup inside of the housing.
My MarkVIII had HIDs and they had their own ballast, idk if you will also have to add a ballast into the equation.

However, it'd be great to see a build thread on this subject if it hasn't been done already! :D
 
Im looking for the same info. I have a friend that owns a company locally that sells HID kits. He tells me the 4runners that he has seen his kits go into, really dont have THAT much glare. Of course projectors are better, but Im still interested in hearing first hand info. I know you can just aim them lower to help. I have no plans to buy projector headlights..so Im hoping this will work out.
 
I have HID's in my reflectors and I am going to switch to projectors or retro some projectors just as soon as I can. Although I do like having the HIDs, and I don't mind blinding other college a$sholes, I do feel like a d*ck when I pull up to a stoplight behind a normal person and I can tell that I am blinding them. And that happens more often than it's worth. So what I'm trying to say is, I'd throw them in the fogs until you can work out a projector of some sort.

Aiming them lower helps, but if you happen to be lifted, it really doesn't help that much because you can't aim them too low (you have to be able to see as well, otherwise, whats the point, right?).

That is true. I forgot about being lifted causing even more problems. I already blind people without HIDs (with a very mild lift), but I need to readjust my headlights.

Ya readjustment will usually do the trick with a small lift and no HIDs. Projectors or reflectors, you should still adjust. That's what I did on my '06, which I have a 3" lift on.

Is your truck lifted or stock?

Btw, @43242code1: the kit I ordered does include ballasts with the bulbs.

I'll post some pics once I get them installed so people can see what it looks like. If its really bad, I'll just do them in the fogs and go from there. Anybody tried or considered using these after market projectors? I just installed my hid's into my stock reflectors, and as far as I can see I don't seem to be blinding people from head on or directly behind them.
The only time it's bad is when I'm turning or coming off a driveway/exit...I also have a lift and some 32's so I'm a little higher as well.
I will try them out for a little longer, but so far no one has flashed me yet :girl:
 
one of my car pet peeves is people who F around with the lighting system.

if it doesn't come from the factory with that lighting setup, don't do it. you're just blinding folks and it looks like you're trying too hard.

buy a truck that comes with HIDs from the factory. you're throwing out less light and light that will tire your eyes quicker than the factory setup.

There was so much glare, I went blind for 2 minutes straight.

Just spare all of us responsible drivers and dont do it.:roadkill:

it's a fact. you fuq with the lighting, you're downgrading light output and putting yourself and others at a safety risk.

plus do you guys actually think you look cooler? you drive a damn commuter SUV. a nice one, but far from rollin in a G55 AMG with HIDs from the factory that look absolutely siq.

If anything, I am improving light output. 4300k HIDs are brighter than stock halogens...I don't follow your logic.

And I'm not trying to look cooler, I'm trying to increase light output on the road which is the whole point of me getting a 4300k kit vs a blue/purple 8,000-10,000k one. Why are you freaking out about this? chill dude, im just trying to get some info from people about what to do/previous experience.
 
I have had 6k hid's in my stock headlight housing for years, I just aimed it down even with my lift it does not seem to affect other drivers.
 
nothing worse than see one coming your way, regardless of a bulb K value, vehicle, how high you sitting or how low your headlights aimed, I always flash the suckers, because I can see them coming mile away. 4300K or 10000K, I would actually say the lower the K value the worse glare is, make sense since 4300K outputs twice the light of 10000K. To realize what incoming traffic see, all you have to do is park in front of wall or garage door 25-30 feet away. You can adjust your headilghts right to the lowest factory setting possible and I can bet you there isnt much difference, lifted trucks even worse, HID projectors just multiply the intensity. Trust me, I spent countless hours on testing stock reflectors, HID projectors and different bulbs, ballast, etc. There is a huge difference, and of course you dont see it from driver's seat
