Newbie and first mod for my 2016 Trail. Ordering the H11 HID Xtreme kit (low beam) from Xenon Depot, going with the 4300 K Philips bulb and don't know if I need the Canbus option. After reading a few posts about this mod I never saw or missed anyone mentioning Canbus. Any advice appreciated.

In some cars ECU tells if there is drop in wattage demand and trows Light Out warning for times when bulb is burned out. Since most HID systems use 35 watt vs original factory 55 that warning can be corrected by Canbus circuit. 4Runner is not one of those cars. Just reliable good oll driver judgement when light is out.

So canbus is needed at a reduced wattage for bulbs that can’t dim. Since low beams are just low beams in the 4Runner it doesn’t need to dim. For the highbeams/DRL, they share the same bulb which dims depending on what you have on. There you need the Canbus if you are going with LEDs.

Same here. Just bought LED H11 and was wondering if I needed that before I got it. When they arrive I’ll let you guys know. I got a cheap set from eBay for $30. No point paying $100-$200 for the same thing just because some company says their set is better than eBay.
I didn’t get that on mine and works great
what are you doing with the LEDs? Low beam? Fog lights? Canbus is not needed for either application but I will not recommend LEDs in low beam. The light output will be inferior to stock halogen bulbs. Fog lights are fine.

Im using them as low beams. I think the Fog light bulb is H16 and the high Beam is 9005. The color is about 6000K so it would be a lot brighter than the factory yellowish ones.

The LEDs will be whiter than stock but the actual lumens will be less than stock bulbs when you measure from a distance. I don't think there are many aftermarket LEDs bulbs that will give better throw than stock in low beam applications. You can use these H11 in your fogs so not all is lost.
If you want brighter low beams, go with the Philips halogen X-tremeVision or H11 HIDs.

Thanks for the information, I think you’re right about the headlights. The bulb works great and looks great but I wanted it to be a little closer to 4300K than 6000K where it’s whiter than the factory look. Here is what it looks like vs the factory Yellowish light. Which I think is ridiculous for Toyota not to put HIDs in a expensive luxury SUV (if that is what they call it).

I wanted to report back, I ended up ordering the Tacoma kit from Retrofit Source.
Install went easy and painless. Hardest part was routing wires and finding a place to mount the ballasts.
The passenger side looks great, I drilled a hole in the plastic dust cap and the included grommet popped right in. On the driverside I had to slit the gromet to run the bulb power through so now the grommet is kind of sloppy in the drilled hole.
Anyhow I am happy with the results. One thing I notice is if I have the headlight switched to AUTO when I start the 4Runner only the driver side bulb ignites. I am assuming that is because of current draw of the starter. Ive read that the igniters on HID kits in general are finicky with current draw at startup.
