HID retrofit w/projectors project

so i have been wanting to do this project for some time now, and i bit the bullet and ordered everything to do a proper hid and projector retrofit.

pics of parts posted later tonight, and i shall do an in depth write up to answer any and all questions, including the ones i still have.

whole kit was $360 shipped, and if i want to upgrade ballasts and bulbs later i can, but if the kit is better quality than i expect, then im golden!

for reference, i purchased everything from The Retrofit Source (U.S.) - HID Projector Retrofit Kits, Retrofit and HID Componenents, Projectors Lens, Wiring Harnesses, Shrouds and more!. Matt is a great guy and i highly recommend him for his customer service!

i purchased the stage 3 retrofit kit, and i know if you are patient you can find all the individually for a cheaper price, but i went with the convince factor and have it all packaged together

I'm getting ready to do the same exact thing (have even exchanged emails with Matt) but I'm trying to find some used 99+ OEM clear headlights at the salvage yard. I know I could go the ebay aftermarket route but figure it'll be best to stick with OEM.

Please post any and all tips to include minor parts needed. I'll be doing my overseas so I have to have everything on-hand before I begin.

my only hang up currently is after i cut the hole in the back, how im going to make sure that the projectors are level before i fasten anything down. i also decided to just use my stock headlights instead of buying a set of donor headlights, seeing as how i already have 01 lights. i was kind of nervous about messing it up, but im just going to go for it. worst comes to worst i just go to the toyota wrecking yard and get a new set, and thats if i mess up.

I sold my 3rd Gen and got a 4th Gen. I ended up putting the HIDs in the 3rd Gen with decent results. For the 4th Gen I decided to try HIR bulbs. I like them much much better. There is no startup delay, no warm-up and while not as bright as HIDs, they are a lot brighter than stock bulbs. I'm pretty sure you can use the same - modified - bulbs on the 3rd Gen but you should do some research. My sig has a link to my 4th Gen HIR install. It was significantly easier than the HID install.

Congrats on joining the retrofit club! I finished mine a few months ago and it is amazing! You will definitely love it. I do want to dispel one myth here and now though. If you are doing a true projector retrofit, there is absolutely no reason to use OEM factory Toyota headlights. The whole reason people love these 99+ housings is because of their improved light output which is the result of two things, clear lenses and better reflector technology. However; a retrofit completely eliminates the need for reflectors right? Of course. So all you really need is a decent glass lens housing set like the ones off rock auto and you're all set! Much cheaper and it leaves the 99+ oem's for the guys that don't want to retrofit but want improved light output. :driving:

I did the upgrade with the stage 4 kit from the retrofit source. They are great to deal with and answered my questions during the install. I will post pictures of the finished project in a week or 2. I am going to start a build thread for my 4runner soon, when my lift goes on. It is a major pain to install especially since I wanted a factory look to the install.

gosh man you've got some skill! those look way clean! ive seen this thread but i dont think ive ever seen the finished product on your truck.

Im leaning towards the easy way out and getting the morimoto mini's, there is no way i could pull something like what you have and not ef something up, i don't think id have the patience either... looks great though man! what kind of bulbs do you run with those?

haha thats crazy! ive heard good things about those phillips bulbs, and i guess you can pretty much find them anywhere right? Now i just got to decide if i want those, or DDM's $15 bulbs...
