HID's in Fogs......Good idea?

So i am going to upgrade my Low beams to HIDs and i was thinking of doing the fogs as well.

I'm going back and fourth about if i want to just upgrade the bulb in the fogs or do actual HIDs....

For those of you who have HID's in your low beams......what did you do with your fogs?

Stock? Upgraded Bulb? or did you go all out with another set of HIDs?

I did HID's 8K in lows and fogs looks great

Depends whether you want to match the fogs to the low beams, or have yellow fogs so they are actually useful.

If you match them to you low beams, then they will look fine. If you do 3000K HID's in the fogs, the yellow will overpower the low beams and you will have yellow light instead of white.

I put PIAA Ion Crystal bulbs in my fogs so that they are yellow but not overpowering.

I see tons of rigs on the highway in Jersey using HID kits, can't be all that bad. I am from Jersey so I know the cops can be strict there, but how about using a kit with a legit color in your projectors? Should be able to get away with a 4300K kit, look OEM with the 'Runner's projectors, and not shout 'hey look at me!'

i say go for it. either match the low beam color or go the yellow route. but if you match, i wouldn't go higher than 6000K for both. just my personal preference. i have 6000K in my low beams and plan to match them in the fogs in the next few weeks.

OP totally up to you, im running 4300K on my headlights right now and hoen endurance on my fogs(yellow), for me personally i didn't feel it was necessary to put HID's on my fogs..

Now if you wanted to just go with white and wanted to match your HID headlights then go for it cause no regular bulb out there will match your HID lights.

My last rig had horrible headlights (smoked lenses didn't help). My 4runner is night and day different, I can't see needing any more light. good luck with that! 55 watt runs considerably hotter than 35 watt and if used with cheap chinese HID bulbs (you cannot get a Phillips in 9006) can very well melt your fog lights :nono:

for mike 07se, check the laws, it is illegal in N.J. (right now) to install HIDs in any vec. that has or is designed for halogen light housings without also changing the reflectors. (read SEMA news letters)( the cop forums,stc.) there are also some laws makers that want to make it illegal period, if they get away with that, not that they will, but if, even if it comes from the factory with them , they would have to be removed. same with some other things,im not saying its possible for them to even get away with creating a law like that, but some want to. hey , there are people that would like to see things like the bumper guards , steel bumpers, etc. because of insurance co.s pushing such things, made illegal also. in theyre words, "it gives some people unfair advantage over others". i guess you never had your bumper or headlight height measured by inspection or law enforcment either. i have, not in my t4r, yet, but in other vec.s. granted it does depend on what they put up with in the area you live in. ive been driving in this state for over 38 years & have seen the laws change so much over the years. whats legal in a state today , may become illegal tomorrow, things are changing fast. ive modified my vec.s plenty over time, at my age, financial point,physical disabilities,etc., im just tired of dodging or working around the system.

HIDs in reflecor housing is a bad idea. 06+ fogs are reflecor type not a projector like on 03-05.

Damn you must READ too much. Yes they run hotter but the fogs on the 06+ 4runner are a decent size, about the same size as my low beam housing on my cbr1000 and the 55watt 4300k is doing FINE in there.

I've driven and stayed in NJ about 2000 times and NEVER been bothered in ANY of my cars with aftermarket HID's. I have 4300k in my 4 runner and it looks completely OEM. Yes if your driving with some pinkish, purple 12k crap, then I understand. You can put 4300k in just about anything whether it be D2R or D2S and get away with it. its when you get 6k, 8k, etc... and its the color of an aquarium that you start to have a problem.

Why is it a bad idea? I cant stand people that just regurgitate what they've read elsewhere.

If you want to have your fogs on ALL the time, then HID's might be a little annoying because people are going to flash you, especially after a lift. I dont use my fogs often, so I dont mind installing 55watt 4300k hids in there. And if they did melt, I'd buy another set of fogs used, and get a 35watt kit, NOT a big deal. I'm really not worried about them melting though

first off,guys, im not trying to start a fever here, the mans post was about HIDs in fogs, all i said was that they are" ilegal in my state", so i went with upgraded bulbs for lows instead, & thought that the same for the fogs works, & didnt think HIDs in fogs, would be nesessary for him since the yellow Hoen bulbs were good & functional, too , just suggested an option to the" HIDs in fogs", since he asked everyone, i wasnt telling anyone not to do it. so lets not hi jack this. its off topic. but in my final defense, n.j. law states that you cannot install HIDs in a housing designed for & has/came with from factory halogen lights. period, this wording, plus, without changing the reflectors is "theyres" not mine, so if its incorrect, call them on it, not me.people get pulled over all the time for having bright lights, hell, in my state, try just driving with the fogs on all the time. you may get away with it, most of the time, but if ever pulled over & ticketed, even if the cop is wrong, to me, its an inconvenience to fight it in court.the less reasons for being pulled over , the better. i respect & backup anyone thats willing to do such things, im just tired of it, myself. i suggest this issue shouldnt go any further on this mans post.

I didnt say a 55watt kit cant burn a housing, it depends on the size. I use M tuning HID's and their 55watt kit is in my cbr 1000. The headlight has no issues and its on 24/7. If it can go in there without burning anything, then no reason it cant fit in an 06+ fog housing which is similar in size. (in reference to the disance of the bulb from the lens cover, sides, etc...

When it comes to legality retrofitting doesn't make it any more legal, but is it safer? Yes, of course if done right you won't be blinding anyone. But when it comes down to it, aftermarket HID kits are illegal in every single state because they are not D.O.T. approved but then again siome cities & states enforce illegal HID's strongly and others don't give a damn... but yeah I'd say HID fogs is a major plus!
