High Cold Idle RPM"s

Since new 3 weeks ago my 2005 V8 with 900 miles starts up and revs about 1500 rpms at cold idle. Is this the same as the rest of the V8 owners? After the warm up the engine idles normal, but I find this cold Idle to high when in reverse or drive and requires more then normal brake pressure.

Yup thats totally normal. Our 05 V8 does the same thing. All Toyota's we've owned did it. In fact, every single Japanese car I've driven did the same thing.

it's a function that the eci does when the engine is cold.

basically its the engine warming up.

You have to love the search feature here! I was getting ready to post the very same question.

My '06 V-8 4Runner is doing the very same thing, initially 1500 rpm at start-up, then it slowly drops to around 1100 within a minute or two, and I head out. Once the engine is at normal operating temperature, a typical idle is around 700 rpm.

I feel relieved that it's normal.

I assume the tranny is built to handle the higher-than-normal idle when the engine is cold?

Would having the AC on affect the RPM since that would be an additional load on the engine?

yup. ever notice the truck trying to creep forward when a/c is on and you're stopped at a light ?

Yup, there's an extra load. If you're stopped and the engine is warm, lightly hold the brakes, enough so the truck doesn't creep forward. Click on the AC and you can feel a slight jerk, almost like you're hit from behind. You might also see your RPMs kick up slightly.

The ECU monitors the A/C relay. Whenever the A/C compressor clutch is engaged, the ECU increases the rpms to something around 100 rpms greater than when the A/C is off.

Some people say it's almost like doing a neutral drop. Since Toyota doesn't recommend warming up (not to mention it wastes fuel), I just wait a minute or so until the RPMs drop just a bit before I take off.

My 2000 V6 does the same thing.. should I sit there and wait for it to idle down or just put it in gear and go... b/c when placed in either reverse or drive.. it idles normal
