High ideling after morning start up...

So im getting a high idle after morning start up, it usually stays at 1500 after cranked for a few minutes, then gradually down between 1100-1300, it will then shoot up to 1500 for a second every minute. After about 4-5 minutes or when put in "D" it will idle at 900. Is this normal? It's not even cold out!

No, that's not normal. Mine starts at about 1,100 and settles at 700 - 750. Just finished an 800 mile trip to Louisiana with zero problems. '99 SR5 with 224K.

I'm not sure what mine idles at right now but I do know it's cool enough here (Calgary, Alberta) that it does go into higher idle. I think around 1300 and then settles down to 700ish after awhile (manual, so no kick down).


I imagine if I didn't park in the garage at night it would jump to 1500 at start-up in the morning. It gets to around +4-7 C (38-45ish?) at night.

mine idles are 900 then once it warms up it idles at 500. have you checked you throttle cable to see if its too tight, or any vacuum hose leak? if there is a leak in lets say the PCV valve or any hose in the brake booster it will idle high and jump around.

I didn't notice his location but did notice that "It,s not even cold out".

My concern is the settled idle; 500 seems low especially if running air conditioner. Mine seems perfect at 7xx's. 900 seems as though it'd just be wasting gas. 1,500 every minute is also of concern.

Sorry, I didn't read the post well either.

1500 is a bit high for warmer weather for sure, and the idle shouldn't jump.

He did say 900 once in drive, which is appears high too.

Mine's like yours at about 700 at idle.

Check the idle control. Clean it if need be. Also clean the throttle body butterfly valve.

Try cleaning the iac and see if that helps .

1200-1500ropm is normal upon startup til it warms and then it should drop to around 700-800rpm after that.
