high idle at start up

just wondering what others idle speed at cold start up is? not winter cold startups, but initial start for the day in spring/summer temps.

my 08 v6 starts at 70-80 degrees & hits 1600 rpm & takes over a minute to lower down to ~1200. has to be fully warmed up to go below 1000. i remember reading of high idle speeds after cleaning the throttle body or other maint with battery disconnected.

is there anything i can do to get the idle speed lower on warm initial start ups? just seems way higher tyan it needs to be in warm weather & is hard on the trans/u-joints shifting into gear. no other modern cars i have owned or been in have this high of an idle for this long.

was also curious what other 4runners start up rpms were at. mine isn't 1400-1500, its more like 1600-1650. & didn't know if maybe something like a battery disconnect reset would help. but sounds like its normal.

its pretty normal for old car to do that. I have 1gr-fe and it does the same thing -- cold start idle is around 1600ish rpm and slowly goes down

i suppose all cars are different. i had a 1997 jeep cherokee as a daily for 15 years & it never started that high, even in dead of winter & 0* it would start at maybe 1300-1400 & drop to 1100-1200 within 15-20 seconds & would go into gear nice & soft. the 4runner idle just seems way higher than it needs to be.

170k on my 05 v6 . This morning was around 1200 RPM for 25 seconds then around 900 after a minute.

thanks. that seems more like it should be, theres no reason for any engine to start at 1500+ in warm summer temps & hover around 1300-1500 for almost a full minute.

sounds like different 4runners do have different start up idle speeds... which is why i started this thread & asked about it. i plan to do a throttle body & MAF cleaning along with a new air filter, then do a battery disconnect & see if anything changes.

I know you have the V6, but I have the V8 and mine is at around 1200 rpm at startup and drops down to around 900 as well, it doesn't matter on mine if it's summer or winter, I think either engine should be about the same, I see no reason that Toyota would have one be higher than the other, IMHO.

That being said it's possible it could the the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor), but unfortunately starting with the 4th Gens that sensor is made into the throttle body and cannot replaced or adjusted the only way is to replace the throttle body, I don't know why Toyota did this, on all older Toyotas you could replace the sensor itself without replacing the throttle body.
