High Idle Idle After Cleaning Throttle Body

So i took my throttle body off to clean it yesterday and when i put everything back together and warmed it up, the idle stayed at about 1900 rpms. I took it for a drive, disconnected the battery and i couldn't get it to idle right. i did notice that the spark plug closest to the driver was disconnected. i didn't notice any power loss or misfires so this was weird...

Also, after driving a short distance, the idle actually fluctuates (see video)

anyone know whats going on?

could throttle body cleaner mess up the TPS or IAS if some got on it?

A couple of months back, I replaced my plugs, cleaned out the throttle body and MAF and after I put everything back together I had the same issue with the high idle. I checked all my vacuum hoses and it all looked good. So I was puzzled, however after about 20 minutes of driving things all settled down to normal.

removed the EFI fuse for a few hours... disconnected the battery for a few more hours... still having the same issue. can someone help me out here?

not on this car as much, but i have heard of very similar issues on domestic cars from cleaners and such getting in the lines after a tb cleaning. vapor lighter than air into the sensor can cause a high idle like that.

how much have you driven it since? if it is residuals already in the lines you basically have to burn them out, if its not sputtering or choking under load dont be scared to drive it for a little while and possibly get rid of anything hanging out in the lines.

but ultimately this is most likely some sort of sensor. might be misreading, might have fouled. if you can get a set of sensors from the jy for cheap or in your pocket, it might be any easy way to test it yourself.

edit: if all you did was take off the tb and clean it (how dirty was it btw?) then you are definitely looking at a sensor issue i would say. like i said, if it doesnt clean out in several miles of driving, a new sensor should fix it. whichever one it is. when it comes to thatm the actual sensor, i cant help you there. thats why i'll try a few until one works, and it almost always does, lol!

Step back for a moment. The high idle didn't start until after you cleaned your throttle body. The spark plug is a separate issue.

In reality, the most likely thing you did was forgot to hook up one of the vacuum hoses. There really isn't many, but double check. Also, the intake tube is easily able to crack if it hasn't been moved in a while, so check for cracks.

You're getting unmetered air in there....and if you just cleaned your throttle body, it should be easy enough to re-trace your steps and figure out what is going on. Check for hoses cracked or not connected.

hi idle

If you removed the throttle valve, did you replace the gasket? Try pinching off the various lines to see if anything changes. Best guess is you don't have something hooked up right or tore one of the hoses. I would start from scratch.

What did you clean it with? Hopefully not brake clean.

i did replace the gasket.... i'll try pinching the hoses today to see if i find something else... can i spray starting fluid around to see if there's a leak?

i did in fact use brake clean, is that bad? just kidding lol i used valvoline throttle body cleaner

throttle body

After doing some more searching I am guessing the throttle body may be worn, when you cleaned the plate, I be the gap between the edge of the plate and the perimeter is too large. The other possibility is a piece of carbon got lodged keeping the plate open. Fortunately these throttle bodies arent too expensive

well i don't see how it'll be fine one day and worn the next after i clean it... i'm going to switch out my TPS to see if that fixes anything.... i checked for carbon wedged in the plate... it all seems good. also, the idle speed seems to go lower every day so it might be adjusting its self

I went away on its own after a few weeks. i still get an occasional high idle (at about 1000rpm) but it'll go away after driving a little. how high is your idle?

You can try spraying the throttle body cleaner on all the vacuum hoses while its running. If the idle changes, then you can find a leak that way.

Another possibility is that the cleaner dripped down into the Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) which connects with the throttle body. The gummed up gunk can drop down and clog it enough to keep it at a high idle even after its warmed up.

I would try taking the throttle body off the motor, and disassemble the IAC, and clean that properly as well.

Don't think it's a vacuum leak, it was running fine before I removed the TB.

Already cleaned the IAC. Twice. Used almost an entire can of cleaner.

Idle is around 1700.

I had this and it went away. Sprayed the butterfly area down with penetrating oil on the outside. It was acting like the plate would not close all the way. But then it went away.

OK - Just cleaned my MAS & throttle body and I'm experiencing the same issues. On the V6 there really aren't any lines, but I checked twice...

High idle about 1700...

I used throttle body cleaner & mas cleaner... NO brake fluid!!

When you clean the throttle body, all the gunk goes down into the IAC which is "Idle Air Control". It is a sensor on the bottom of the throttle body. The dirt and grim from the throttle body drips down into the valve clogging it up.

What you need to do is remove the throttle body, take of the IAC and clean the little valve that is in there. once you do this, it should idle at a lower RPM.

Just remove the 4 screws on the bottom of the throttle body and the IAC will come right off. no need to buy a new gasket.

Hope this helps.

Same issue today took it to Dealer service manager stated they dont have a range for the High Idle and yet they handed me a hardcopy DATA LIST/Active Testt procedure showing the heading labeled MEASURE ITEM/RANGE in the row labeled Engine Speed it displayed maximum rpm 16383 and under the heading NORMAL CONDITION engine speed stated 690 to 790 rpm : idling Yet they claim nothing is wrong because it didnt throw the light and the tech even stated it appeared to be between 1700-1900! They said they would have corporate call and send me the specifications as they DID NOT have this specification since it was Federal Law! What???? SMgr also said this was normal and that the computer adjusted the RPM according to how cold it was? No answer ever disclosed as to the range of the high idle? Anyone ever found this out? BTW I own a 2013 4Runner V-6 I indicated I was noticing that my transmission was going to take the brunt of this high speed and yes I did let it warm a couple of minutes to get oil pressure circulating to the upper portion of the heads! Wanted to suggest that I also leave it garage to warm to operating temperature! Is there a TSB on this issue! I just have trust issues with people trying to backpeddle an issue to some other circumstance! Also asked I had read the Owners Manual ? Which I have it states in their own manual to NEVER RACE THE ENGINE!! If too high an idle is not racing the engine why are so many having issues with this specific problem ? Thet expect us to just go away and give up!

The problem is your TB is OLD and cleaning it cleared up stuff that was blocking the air port. Now with all that grime gone it leaks a bit. There are other threads discussing this and pictures if you want to go look them up.

Just take the vehicle home from the dealer as-is and then buy a complete used TB off an eBay wrecking shop for $120. That is what I did and it worked out great. Mine came off a Tacoma with about 90K miles on. I paid my local mechanic $45 to swap out the TB.

BTW those eBay parts sellers, the legit ones all offer 6 month warranties so the risk is very small.
