High idle on '84 4runner...

Hi everyone, I just bought my first 4Runner and I am having idling issues. (22r) It runs fine but I was told by the smog station it needs to be lower. It runs between 1200 and 1500. I figure about 700rpm or so. I've adjusted the idle screw all the way out and there is absolutely no change in idle. Does anyone have any ideas?

Well first off need to know what year and if it is Carburated or Fuel Injected. It will help narrow the options.

It's a 1984 and it's a 22r therefore it has a carb...

Not everything in 84 was carbed. There is a diaphram between the valve cover and the right side of the carb. What happens is it gets pin holes in it. there are three screws holding it that follow a vacuum line. the diaphram is spring loaded in order to replace the diaphram you have to buy the entire carb gasket rebuild kit. its the only peice you need. Do NOT drill out the idle adjustment screw it is nothing but headaches. Been there done that. That should readjust your idle and also help with emmissions.

In order to get to it it is easiest to remove the valve cover and the air cleaner cover. And a right angled phillips screwdriver. dissconnect the one vacuum line remove screws and as you are removing the diaphram it has a brass cap like center and a spring. reassemble in the same manner. What happens is when the pinholes are created into the diaphram it causes engine surges high idle and low idle . It also kills your fuel milage.

Again I can NOT emphasize about not messing with the idle mixture screw. My carb and everyone I know who had a carb never got them to run right again. Even rebuilding does not help. Toyota sealed it for a reason and I have seen toyota techs screw it up. (I worked with the techs)

I also drilled out the cap on the idle mix screw to adjust it, again, w/o any problems.

I would try adjusting the idle mix screw. You should not have to in theory, but then again the truck is 23 yrs old so the carb is a bit worn.

The first year for the 22RE was 85.

I really wasn't going to say anything but you screwed up in correcting me in the other thread and you have done so here. Let me show you a source you may wish to try reading since it is obvious you like to speak before reading. Sorry I am not very good at photoshop but photobucket works just nice for me.

You definitely shouldn't be afraid to adjust your mixture screw. It's not really rocket science. Just be sure that before you start turning it you mark it and lightly screw it in and count the turns as you go in as a baseline. Then write that number down, and adjust the screw accordingly based on that count and see how it runs.

It's nothing that can't be put back to where it was, just be sure you don't have it rich when you go in for emissions...
