High Intensity Infrared (HIR) bulb install

I'm a little sad, I thought he was going to show us a mod so you could drive with NV and light up the road too without anyone knowing! LoL
 
i installed a set of hir2 9012 in my sr5 and i love them. they seem to be much brighter and more crisp than my previous dealer bulbs. i would suggest restoring the headlight lens if foggy before putting these bulbs before you can judge the bulbs.
 
Resurrecting an old thread.

Needed to replace a bulb so I thought I would go this route. Got a pair of Philips 9012's (with shipping) off Ebay for about the same local price for the Silverstars that I've been running.

There is a definite improvement in light. The light is whiter and more intense. Not blindingly so and no other vehicle driving down the road is going to wonder about your headlights. If I was looking for one descriptive word I would probably choose 'crisp.'

They are slightly whiter and definitely brighter than stock halogen. They have a clear bulb, no blue tint, so are not as white/blue as Silverstars but are brighter.

I'm happy with them. I don't use my high beams much and with the brighter low beams I don't see a need to upgrade the highs.

Thanks for posting this, I just recently did this on my Lexus and it made enough of a difference I intend to d it on my 5th and 4th gen.

I am not sure may people on here have used NVGs and blackout lights.....I LOLed when I read this post....Not sure many people got your reference
 
I recently ordered a 3D printer that I'm still waiting for.

One of my projects is going to be to redesign the plastic rings on the back of the headlights so they accept the HIR bulbs without any modification to the bulbs. They are only attached with 3 Phillips screws so it will be an easy upgrade.
 
Seems like a cool mod, very innovative.

Somehow, running bright/HID-like bulbs in a non projector housing seems very ricey to me. Lots of tricked out civics running around with this sort of setup.

Not sure if you are referring to the HIR as ricey. They're not. They are a step up in brightness but not all that different in colour than stock. Slightly whiter but not like Siverstars and definitely not the HID-wanna-be blue or purple glare. The 9012 work perfectly in a non-projector lens because the geometry is virtually the same as a 9006.

I don't think there's an HIR option out there for our 5th gen low beams...your best bet is the H9 conversion for the factory H11 low beam bulbs. Thank you. I did do the H9 conversion on y 4th gen so I may consider doing it on the 5th. But I am going to try to make the HIRs work in it first.
 
I am pleased with the results over stock. Upgraded bulb on left side.

That's what I thought I was getting when I did mine but I obviously misunderstood your earlier post in the thread. I can't return the bulbs but at least I can get my money back from the army surplus store for the NV goggles...
 
Asmara, I am thinking of doing this same HIR upgrade. Have you had any issues with the high beams being 5w higher than stock like melting a bulb housing or wire harness?

Have you been happy with this setup now that you have had it for awhile?

I'm still very happy with the install. I can always see the difference between the 4Runner's lights and our other car (Jeep Liberty). I like it so much, I'm not even considering HIDs anymore.

I have not had any issues running the high beams and 5 watts won't make any genuine difference. It you actually look at headlight bulbs they typically say nominal wattage which basically means not exactly 60 watts. Where people start melting wires is when they double the wattage.

The other thing I would mention about the high beams, I really don't use them that much. If you want to save a couple of bucks and are a city dweller, I would just do the low beams initially.

Final note, I still have not had to replace the bulbs so they last a long time.
 
Sorry to resurrect this old thread buuuut just wondering if HIR bulbs are still a thing and where I might get some for my 04?
