"High Mileage" 5th Gen

After suffering oil leaks on my 2005 Honda Accord (Valve cover and VTEC solenoid), my research pointed towards PCV valve as a potential cause. The PCV valves are cheap and take just minutes to replace. I am now a strong advocate for their regular replacement every 50K miles as preventative maintenance.

OCV screens? Not familiar with this I think it’s the first time I’ve seen someone discuss this…hate not doing everything preventative maintenance. What does this help with or prevent?? Thanks.

See link below. They screen the oil being supplied to the oil control valves in your valve covers. They should be clean unless you do a lot of excessive idling or long OCI. then they can catch sludge.

2021 trd pro 79000 miles

I picked up my truck august 10 2021 with 4 miles on it. I will be at 80000 this week. Been amazing other than 3 fox shocks replaced under warranty. Daily driver.

Yeah my 2014 SR5 has developed the “whine” at around 135k miles. This has me really worried, almost sounds like a supercharger but I’m being told it’s a “normal” noise which I find hard to believe but it’s still super smooth. I’ve always thought a whine means something serious like a torque converter or timing chain wear issue? Do others have a whining noise with their higher mileage 4Runners???

Serpentine belt idler pulleys?

2018 trdOR

Have a 2018 trd OR 4wd bought from hall Toyota maybe 6-8 months ago had 15k miles on it!!! 6112 in the front and 5100 in the rear; molle rack shelf in trunk and front hitch installed up front for fishing poles and cooler! No BMC and 285/70/17 Toyo open country RT (rugged terrain) bought straight stock had lift tires and accessories all put in after I bought suv! Love it!!!

Yearly Check in again. Any new members to the 100k club?

147k on my 2015 SR5 and a few issues for me this year.
-Horn would only work when turning left or right. Had to replace the spiral cable and replaced with OEM.
-(1) TPMS battery died so replaced all (4) with discout tire units.
-Battery replaced with dealership unit after failing to hold charge for a few days. I suspect running the rear 120v plug in the trunk for my battery bank / fridge unit causes premature wear on my starting battery.
-Replaced my 285/70/17 C-load Wildpeak A/T3Ws with new 255/80/17 E-load ones. Got ~54k miles out of the 285s before I felt they were unsafe this winter.
-Another cracked windshield that I still need to replace. Seems to be a yearly item when driving in the mountains in CO.

For 2023 would like to replace my front wheel bearings and CVs as preventative care. Will keep the current ones as spares.

All in all still love the way the 4runner drives, engine and transmission feel the same as the day I bought it and still looks and feel new to me. Cheers.

Up to 166k on my daily driven 2015 SR5. Still drives like new and only a few repairs this year:
CV Boot Tear at 150k, replaced.
Replaced all fluids and brake pads around the same time.

Pelfreybilt sliders are starting to rust after 100k miles. Just patchy around the welds and where they have been beat on rocks. Will correct this winter. Steering wheel is starting to look rough and drivers seat bolster is starting to wear and loosing its shape. For part cost Toyota quoted me $800 plus for a new steering wheel.

Otherwise in great shape. Please keep the data coming. Anybody else break 100, 150, 200k?

Steering wheel is starting to look rough
Search amazon for "Loncky Custom Steering Wheel Cover for Toyota"
Its a leather(ette?) cover that stiches on and is better than the Toyota wheel. My wheel was trashed after 4 years, I installed that cover in 2015 and it is still perfect. It's not a bulky POS like 99.9% of steering wheel covers, it looks/feels like an OEM steering wheel.

About to break 354k miles on my 2011

Awesome tip!

I think you laid this out before but in those 354K what OEM parts have failed and needed to be replaced? I think you are one of the very few folks on here that really beat on their truck offroad and also have high mileage. I know whenever I go out I get slightly paranoid things will fail in the field when I'm in really remote places. I'm only at 170K with my 2012 and have only had the usual suspects fail on me so far: Tie rods, one steering rack, lower ball joints

closing in on 170k miles. aside from routine maintenance these are the only repairs that have been done

- NSS replacement in 2022
- valve cover gaskets, spark plug o rings, cam shaft seals in 2021 (you could argue this is maintenance related but I wouldn't call it routine)
- power steering line replacement in 2023
- fuel injector harness replacement in 2024 (rodent chewed when I parked at a train station, no fault of the 4runner)
- spare tire hoist replacement in 2021 (learned my lesson and now I lubricate and drop the tire once a year)
- rear window motor and regulator replacement in 2023 (it was working but going a bit slow and I got fed up waiting for that damn window and replaced everything)

some other notes:

- my factory XREAS lasted about 155k miles. only one rear was weeping, but replaced all 4 corners in 2021
- had a couple heat shields come loose and had to use fender washers to mount them back, ended up doing pretty much all the bolts with large fender washers. should be good for another 10 years. had a cat shield come loose as well and fixed that in 2023
- the third row seats were used a total of zero times. so they've been removed. there is SO much space back there without them. anyone interested in new third row seats? seats plus hardware weigh about 150lbs
- the TPMS is kind of annoying when doing tire swaps. the light won't come on until you drive around with the swapped tires. they need to be reprogrammed every time. the techs think it's programmed when they swap the tires since the light is off. then it comes on during the drive home and I have to bring it back. maybe it's an early 5th gen quirk but it's sure annoying. cmon toyota add a TPMS reset button...

347K on our 2014 SR5. This weekend I’m replacing sway bar links as both have cracked/split boots that are leaking grease. Installing Moog sway bar links. We should go over 350K in the next couple weeks with a back and forth trip from the SoCal home to our ranch in Montana. I will need to do an oil change and transmission fluid change while up in Montana.

shocks & springs what have you gone through? I bought the Trd pro fj kit during the clearance sale in 2017. I had about 65k miles on it and one rear 5160 shock started leaking so I replaced it with a pair of 5100s. Came across a new in box dobinsons ims set up on FB market at a good price really tempted to buy it. Wife approves of it since I told her that 6112 might leak or springs could go and its the same cost as a complete dobinsons.

Replaced the OEM shocks at about 80K with Bilstein 5100s and they are still going. Dust cover boots on the rears split, but can’t figure out how to get the replacement ones on over the “eye”. I cut off the split portion and zip tied remainder in place.

Alternator went out at 320K, replaced it with OEM Denso and it’s going strong.

Had the fan clutch fail and started to randomly lock up on downshifts. Eventually the fan blades disintegrated causing damage. Blade shot all over, popping dents in the hood, puncturing the radiator, cutting and oil cooler line. Wife was driving it and fortunately got it to the side of the road and shut down before any damage to the engine. Back to running great now.

Up to 184.3k and a little late on my yearly check-in. Should break 200k this year with a trip out to OR and the usual fun.

Only issue I've had was with some aftermarket parts I purchased. Replaced both CVs with re-manufactured from CVJ. Noticed one CV had an awkward rotation at full droop and wanted to get both swapped ahead of failure.

The issue was the hose clamp terminations CVJ uses are taller than factory. One outboard hose clamp was hitting my lower control arm each rotation and eventually snapped off, boot was not being held and slinging grease. CVJ looked at it, repaired it with a low profile clamp and told me it was likely my lower control arm bushing being worn out that caused the impact.

Will swap LCAs this year but really dreading trying to get the bolts out.

375K miles. Engine running strong and consumes no oil. Transmission was replaced last fall as it was suffering from delayed engagement. It was replaced with a salvage unit that had 43K miles on it and that transmission is running good.

just crossed 170k miles last week. regular oil changes every 5k miles, 0w20 oil. regular regular fluid changes for differentials, transmission, transfer case, brakes , steering , cooling etc. list of non-wear and tear items replaced:

neutral safety switch 2023
spare tire carrier rusted and could not be used 2022
power steering line leak 2023
valve cover gaskets 2021 (you could argue this is wear and tear though)
oem skidplates replaced with new oem skid plates. 2021. my old ones were showing some rust
liftgate window motor and regulator 2023 - was getting slow so replaced it but it was working
rear wiper arm and motor 2024

not bad for a 2012 with that mileage. once the vehicle hit 10 years though you can see that some of the components are starting to wear out.

now my 2010 rx 350 with 120k miles has had the following non wear and tear

oil cooler line replaced from rubber to metal under warranty
left and right rear trailing arm

that's it. the 4runner has been an absolute unit for the family, gets all the mileage and stays outside all year in the winter. but the rx I still think is proving to be more reliable even though it only has 120k miles and sits in a garage that doesn't even get below freezing in the winter. 70k more miles on the lexus could result in more repairs but it will take many many years at the rate of use to get to that 70k

Update: Just spoke with my wife who’s geocaching and camping in the Pocatello area of Idaho. The 2014 is at 397K miles and the engine is purring. Vehicle should be at 400K miles during her trip down to SoCal next week.

My next big maintenance/repair will be replacing front upper and lower control arms. Have the uppers which were removed from a 2024 that was lifted. New lowers have been purchased from Toyota online and are currently in shipment to Montana (no sales tax), but will not arrive before her trip down to SoCal. I will probably end up doing this job over Xmas up in Montana.
