"High Mileage" 5th Gen

Just curious. My 2014 SR5 is at about 54K? Anyone else have this "maybe I should take a break from driving dilemma"?

I'm getting worried that I'm driving it too much! I keep going on road trips and wanting to drive out to Tahoe from SF...and it's adding on a lot of miles.

I know the 15K/year rule. But my 4runner is too fun to drive and too many places to go on weekends.

There's a 15K/year rule??

Guys, it's a 15K rule for LEASES only. Not just driving. Usually they assume the average is 15K/yr and charge you for going over.

That's amazing. I drive 3k a month and bought my T4R new in August and it has 20k already. 15k/yr rule? lmao. I've gotten two oil changes in 2017 already.

Hope to get that far with no problems.

Any issues?
My driver's window switch no longer does auto-down, I have to hold the switch down. I've replaced both front "door checks" which are the devices in the hinge area that damp door movement and provide the travel stops. They both failed* within 50k miles and have been good to go since replacement. The replacements were an updated part number, so it probably won't affect newer 4runners.

Everything else has been routine maintenance, replacing aftermarket modifications, or problems caused by aftermarket modifications.

17 oil/filter changes, 5 sets of tires, 12 front wiper inserts, 1 front wiper arm replacement, 3 rear wiper inserts, 4 windshields, 1 set of spark plugs, 2 brake pad and rotor replacements, 4 differential fluid changes, 1 transfer case fluid change, 6 air filters, 1 ATF fluid change, 1 coolant change, 2 sets of swaybar bushings, 1 each LBJ boot replaced, 1 power steering fluid change, 3 brake fluid changes.

I just changed the inner/outer tire rods and will probably soon replace the LCAs for new bushings and ball joints. Nothing wrong with my old ones, just piece of mind, really.

ETA: The failure mode of the door checks was a clicking sound that they aren't supposed to make. They were still fully functional and most owners wouldn't even notice the issue, but I am anal retentive.

Sounds about average. Last vehicle I kept for 200K had about the same.

136,000 miles

:rockon:2011 SR5. Mine has 136k miles with 0 problem. Regular maintenance (oils, fluids, grease) Just changed driver wheel bearing and sparks plug.

I hope I get that kind of quality out of mine!

My last vehicle was a Benz. Balance Shaft for the engine (covered under warranty at 31k $8,000) Suspension/motor mount issues at 50k ($800) Tranny issues at 80k ($1,200) AC at 120k ($1,800)

I thought repairs like that were normal until I started looking at Toyotas. Thanks for the extensive list Jeremy556

Ahhhh ok...thanks for that. My brother is a bmw salesman and was telling me that I have too many miles on it...I plan to have it for the long haul, but in that tiny chance I have to sell it, I want to make sure as well it has a decent amount of miles.

Yikes! This just makes me cringe. Awful, just awful.

I daydream (and shop) for my next vehicle all the time..... I never find anything I want but a 4R.

156,000 on my 2010 Limited--but only 18,000 are currently mine. My '03 Sport was still running great at 271,000, so I took the plunge and bought a used vehicle with 138,000 miles on the clock. I don't want to jinx myself, but so far not even a squeak or rattle. Came with new shocks, 5000 miles on the tires and a pretty extensive service record from the previous (local) owner that convinced me to go for it.
I'm counting on Japanese technology to come through again. Time will tell.

Truthfully I didn't think that was all that bad. I was so accustomed to German "quality" that I felt 4000$ in repairs over the life of the car was normal.

However this was on top of the $120 oil changes (that I did myself) and $100 brake pads (that I did myself) and $200 rotors (that I did myself) and...

I have a Benz ML350 with 130,000 miles. A/C compressor, pr steering leaks galore, intake manifold flappers gone out, front diff bearings, check engine lights all the time, the list goes on and on and on. Everything fixed and working now but afraid to drive it other than when it snows or If I need to haul something. Has no resale value and pretty much is a throw away. German junk out of warranty.

Reminds me of a 2002 Audi A4 1.8TQ I had. I bought it for about $6,500 w/ 105K miles on it in 2010. Car was beautiful, inside and out. Literally the night I drove it from the dealership, the check engine light came on, the coil packs went. The passenger side window would not go down the next day.

I had it for roughly 2 years, and drove it about 25K miles, and it had issue after issue. The car actually leaked water during a heavy rain storm, and had an oil leak that I was quoted $1300 to fix because they had to remove the transmission to get to it.

Don't get me wrong... The car drove great, when it was able to be driven. I tried selling it on privately on Craigslist. After about two potential buyers came to the house to look at it, I finally felt too guilty about selling it to anyone. I sold it to Carmax a month later for $2K. I vowed to never buy another German vehicle again.

Anyway, I just bought a brand new 2016 T4R in October of this year. Love it so far. Planning on keeping it for the next 10 years. Right now I drive roughly 15-20K miles per year, mostly for work on the highway as my job is nearly a 50 mile round trip Monday-Friday. Hoping to be able to get a solid 10 years out of it w/ no major problems like many of the people on this forum.
