High Mileage Trans fluid change

2003 with 130k and no trans service since at least 50k (maybe more).

I don't feel comfortable with a shop doing the work I'd rather do it myself for not only financial reasons, but my own piece of mind. I also don't feel comfortable pulling the cooler lines and hoping I fill/drain at the same rate, plus I need a helper to accomplish that.

Here is my plan:

Drain pan, pull pan and replace gasket, filter and pan. Repeat drain, two more times via drain plug after bringing to operating temp and working through gears.

Does this sound acceptable for my year and mileage?

Yes, acceptable but,You will want to do 4 drain fills to get over 80% new fluid. If you have a dip stick measure fluid level hot. If you have a sealed trans fluid need to be no less than 98*F and no more than 115*F when you open the fluid level drain plug. I usually drive the vehicle 3-4 miles between drain fills to get it mixed in with the old fluid. Some guys drive a day between each d/f.
