High RPMs in Park

When I put my car in park, the RPMs jump to like just over 2000, then when I put it in gear it drops down to below 1000. What can I do to keep it from idling at such high RPMs?

What year is your 4runner?

If it's an automatic, did you perhaps try to tighten your throttle cable down?

Does it hold steady at 2000rpm, or does it fluctuate?

When you put it in drive, with your foot on the brake, does it try to jump forward?

It is a 98, I tightened the throttle cable a bit (im assuming this may be it), it holds steady, and it doesnt jump forward but it definitely isnt sluggish when I take my foot off the brake.

I would definitely loosen the throttle cable. It sounds like the problem and even if it's not, it's free and you can rule that out.

I suspect that's your issue buddy. Easy, free, fix.

Next time you're tightening the throttle, do it with the motor running (and a friend with their foot on the brake, if you're a safe guy) and make sure you don't hear the motor rev up. If you hear the motor rev, loosen up a bit until the idle goes back to normal (your friend can also monitor this if you're not accustom to the sound of the 5vz).
