High rpms when going down a steep hill

Guys,

Today I was driving down a very steep hill. I reached about 60mph and was coasting, not tapping the pedal nor the brakes.
All of a sudden I notice my rpms are pretty high, like 3500+!
Scared the crap outta me.
On the way back home, it did the same thing down the steep hill.

I thought my transmission was faulty. I have 55k miles and my power train warrantee is about to expire.

I then read about "grade logic"
Wanted to confirm this is normal...

What scared me even more, was that it wouldn't go back to normal at the end of the hill, maybe I didn't wait long enough, I put it in neutral to shift to normal...

I've had this happen to me but I'm not sure if I've hit 3500rpm. I find it does take a few moments for the system to realize the high rpm's are no longer needed. I find the same occurs when ascending on steeper grades. As the highway flattens out, the computer seems to want to maintain higher rpm's a bit longer rather than upshift right away.

Normal. Give it a little gas if you want it to upshift. Just a little...

I have noticed this also, it seems that the 4R will downshift on its own to help brake on a hill, but what happened to you seems a bit excessive. At 3500 rpm @ 60 rpm it must have shifted into 3rd gear which I never had happen no matter what the grade, unless I did it manually, and it always shifted back up right away. I would get this documented with your dealer even if they say its normal just to CYA.

Yea, maybe mine was excessive because I was going so fast?
It was a very steep hill

Driving back and forth through the Siskiyou mountains, Cascades, and the foothills around Mt. Shasta this happens regularly. I've actually figured out how to use it to my advantage and make it go away when I don't think it's necessary. If you find you're not downshifting down hill you tap the brake and it will downshift and if you find you're revving too high just tap the gas and it will shift back up again. Totally normal as far as I'm concerned, been doing it pretty much since the day I bought it and I have 36k miles in just over 18 months. I wouldn't be too concerned.

I knew it would shift but did not know that you could control it like that, Thanks for the info.

Whenever I drive in the mountains, I flip it to manual mode. Down hill, I leave it in second or third and I coast jus fine. When braking on the engine, higher revs are expected. 3500 is hardly red-lining the engine.

Yeah, I consider it a reminder to use the Sport setting in the hills. I've never had it happen without the brakes or cruise control on though. I confirmed to myself that it will kick down to 3rd on a steep grade and heavy braking...and it does not upshift back through the gears swiftly even if you really get on the gas, a shift to S then up is much faster.
