Highest Mileage 4th Gen?

Transmission was replaced at 80k. No offense by why did the tranny go so soon? Was it driven very hard?

Not sure if this is too few miles, but 2003 SR5 4X4 V6 - 146,500.
Runs great, oil changes every 5k (easiest oil change ever), plugs every 50k or so. Just put on third set of tires. Also, on third set of brake pads.
It's been in a few accidents....my wife hit a deer a few years back, but it still kicks ass. We call it "the beast."
I love the 4R....just a great vehicle.

Hello.
I just purchased an 04 SR5 with 214,000 miles this past weekend. It is the cleanest vehicle I have ever seen with even over 100k miles so the PO definitely took care of it. Its been 3 days and its almost up to 216,000.
My question is, I will be towing a Spec E30 (2700LB car) with a small trailer (1,200-1,800 lbs) What should I be worried about, or what should I do preventative? I plan on changing motor oil, trans fluid, and diff oil before ever towing, and will of course use a class III hitch with sway control and trailer brakes. The trans and engine feel strong. Any suggestions?

Congrats. As long as it's had regular maintenance, you'll last a long time. V6 or V8? V8 should have the timing belt changed if not already within the last 100k. You're on the right track. I use Redline for the front & rear differential & transfer case. Drain & fill tranny with Toyota ATF. Mobil 1 in the engine. Drain & fill coolant with Toyota LLC. I also went a bit further & flushed the power steering fluid with ATF III just as preventative maintenance.

Is there risk of gear wash by putting new fluid in such a high mileage trans? Obviously a flush is out of the question but I figure I'm only askin g for trouble at this stage..
Also think ill put it on full syn. Noticed a tad of sludge under oil cap, what can i do to blast sludge out? Seafoam in oil?

Do you have any info on prior maintenance? From Carfax or prior owner? If not, I find paying for a Carfax can be invaluable. Another resource that's FREE is from Toyota. You can register your VIN & if it's been serviced at a Toy dealer, & sometimes from other dealers, it may show maintenance/work done. This may give you a clue as to whether things have been done timely, or even if a tranny service has been had.

I'd still risk doing a drain & fill on the tranny. MAKE SURE TO ONLY USE TOYOTA ATF. The old & new fluid should mix, & this shouldn't disturb whatever particles are "holding" the gears in place.
As far as sludge, you could Seafoam the oil. Make sure to change out the spark plugs after. Although if your 4R is running well, I'd just stick to 5k oil changes with full synthetic. The detergents should help clean things up with regular changes. I do see that you track though... so you may end up trying to eek more power from the 4R, & Seafoaming the oil should help with that.
