Hill Start Assist ?

How do you turn Up Hill Start Assist System on for 2004 V-6 4WD 4-R? Owners manual only explains how it works. I stoped on steep hill today whith another car behind. When i moved my foot from brake to gas truck roled back. Did not hit anything because I gave it enough gas to activate Trac Control. I want to prevent that in the future. Hill Assist is the way, according to manual, but how do you use it? Help, before I run some poor Miata driver over...

I'm a little confused about this too. I don't see anything in the owners manual that says that the driver has to do anything to activate it, so maybe it should engage automatically?

My 4Runner rolls backwards on steep hill too.

You can't set anything on it. Mine rolls back a bit ih 4H befoe it kicks in. I have not rolled back in 4L as of yet, so maybe it is far more agressive in 4L

Isn't it supposed to work in 2wd as well?

I have no idea, I have the V8 so its always 4wd

Yes -- and it does work.

It automatically engages: If the vehicle is in a forward gear and rolls back, the brakes pulsate to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Sometimes it takes a second to kick in, but it does work.

Yup happened to me once on a VERY steep hill in the rain. You can feel it pulsate the brakes as well as a beeping noise.

It does not seem to work for me. Here is how I tested it when I first got my 4Runner.

I drove up a fairly steep hill and stopped in the middle of it. As I took my foot off the brake pedal, the 4Runner immediately began rolling backwards. I started to hear beeping sounds and brake pulsations, but the vehicle continued to roll backwards. This was all in 2wd.

I thought the hill start assist was supposed to hold the vehicle steady for a few seconds? My 4Runner began rolling backwards the moment my foot came off the brake pedal. The only thing that happened was all kinds of beeping and brake pulsations. Is my hill start assist working?

hitman, i had a similar experience as yours, testing it on a steep hill, the beeping, pulsating etc. i think if it werent for the hill start i would have rolled back a lot faster. thats probably the point of the hill start assist system, it's not to prevent you from rolling backwards completely, but to buy you enough time to get on the gas.

I agree. I beleive it is mainly intended for off road use when you are climbing a very steep grade and lose forward momentum. It would give you more time to react.

I doubt if it really is of much value in everyday driving.

I don't know what u guys are talking about. Mine works just fine. I live in Frisco. Mine never rolled backwards on steep hills, yet !

Mine would probubly kept roling all the way back and over that BMW M-3 behind me if i did not floor the gas fast enough. Brakes pulsated but late, I was on gas already, meanwhile I lost probubly a foot roling back. Bimmer driver was lucky he left some distance, I bet he craped his pants though.
