They need to be 25 years old to import into the US, you can't get a 3rd gen yet, but you could get an '86. You don't see much for 1st gens on import sales sites though. In Canada they only need to be 15 years old, so 3rd gens JUST became available to us, mine gets here in Feb!

Yeah, your correct, but if he wants a non 3.0TD, and gets the V6 gasser, it is legal to import it as it passes emmisions and safety. RHD isn't an issue to import, the exceptions are for when you want a vehicle that didnt pass emmisions and/or safety standards for its day. I did alot of research on this when looking into importing defenders.

If you want one that bad i would say buy a Hilux Surf Badge, and a RHD conversion kit.

That I didn't realize, but IMO the only thing worth dealing with the challenges presented by it being RHD, would be the turbo diesel.

It's not to bad to do RHD, especially an auto, its only annoying at 4 way intersections and merging on highways.

What is really annoying with RHD is that I always turn my wipers on when i want to use the turn signal.

True it is not 25 years old but, it is in canada. so the rule is 15 years? or am i incorrect on this one?

If you plan on having canadian tags on the truck it is fine, but it has another 5 years before it can legally be imported and registered in the US.

If i were you i would send it Row Row from the UK, there is no language barrier so you can find your own truck on the classifieds over there, and then have an exporter pick it up and ship it here for you, it will certianly help you get a better deal.
