Can you buy one in the USA? If so, where?

The Field Monitors, where can you order them? (If possible?)

What makes them so special and are they better then the 5VZE?

1) Not likely. Surf is the Japanese version of our 4Runners. They are the same thing with minor differences. Interior design and few special items, etc. A lot of people like the Surf for the Turbo Diesel engine. Low RPM torque.

3) This is a matter of opinion. The 5VZFE is a great engine. Some feel it's a little under powered but none the less a great engine. As far as the hype about all the Surf stuff, a lot of it is styling. Like JDM for Honda.
 
The occasional Surf pops up on ebay from time to time. Make sure you're comfortable driving a right hand drive vehicle before you go down that path... Otherwise, for me, there are 4 things that I would love to have from one.
Swing out tire carrier.
Powerfold mirrors.
Field Monitor.
Turbo Diesel engine.

I believe MOT is back in the US now, so doesn't have access to anything like that right now. There's another guy on IH8MUD, Akella, he can order new JDM Toyota parts for you, his prices are pretty decent, but something like a field monitor will be crazy expensive. If you find one used, make sure it comes with the wiring pigtails, and the temp sensor. I'm betting Hilux Surf Forum - Powered by vBulletin will be your best bet as they speak English, makes life much easier for most people.

As for the Surf, the big draw is the 1kz-te 3.0L turbo diesel, why anyone would buy a surf with a gas engine is beyond me. That was a great motor, I still miss that truck from time to time. RHD is not as good as LHD for driving here in NA, but in a truck your up high enough that visibility is still pretty good.

As for buying a Surf for use in the US, they need to be 25 years old before you can import them into the US.
 
How common were the field monitors on the hilux surf? Was it an option or did it come with an offroad package or something?

Also, what aftermarket part is comparable to the hilux surf field monitor?

I believe all trim levels of 3rd gen Hilux Surf got the field monitor. No idea about aftermarket stuff.
 
I think the Field Monitor was not standard for all Hilux Surf model grades. Also, there are two types, the GPS and the non-GPS. for use outside of Japan, the better choice would be the non-GPS type.

The better engine would be the 1KD-FTV. it's using the 1KZ-TE block but has an upgraded valve cylinder, DOHC, common-rail direct injection, and variable nozzle geometry turbo. it produces 170ps @3400rpm vs 145 ps @ 3600 rpm of the 1KZ-TE, 350N-m @ 1400 - 3400 rpm vs 335N-m @ 2000 rpm of the 1KZ-TE. The 1KD-FTV has also a better fuel mileage.

I think there's a shop in Texas that sells and installs the 1KZ-TE.

You are asking the wrong question. 1st figure out where you can get a 1/2 cut from and how much it will cost. If you have all the parts, it's not too bad as they are essentially the same trucks. There is some lengthening of wiring harnesses involved I believe, fun stuff like that.

The cost makes it prohibitive for most people. I sold my Surf salvage for what some on here paid for their trucks.

Engine mounts, wiring harnesses, transmission (torque convertor is different for sure from the gas engines, not sure about bell housings), ecu, cluster, etc. Much more than just the engine.
 
My buddy has a Surf rear wing with power mirror if anyone is looking for one of those. Have no idea what he wants for it.
 
there are several types of rear wings.

ones that i have seen are:
one type is the SSR-G wing which is thick and with a power rear under mirror. If you want to see what's immediately behind the vehicle when backing up, you can lower the mirror with a flick of a switch or you can choose to have the mirror in auto-mode wherein several seconds after placing the tranny in reverse, the mirror lowers automatically and moves up after you shift out of reverse. this wing is optional on the SSR-X Limited model grade.

another wing comes with LED high-mount stop lamp.

Still another type doesn't come with the 3rd brake light.
