1989 RHD Surf

I ended up getting a nice Hilux diesel surf a few years ago (2007). As noted above, right out of the gates it over heated and cracked the head. We ended installing a cooler runner aftermarket head and now I never have any issues. I had to jump thru a few hoops to get it legal in the states but it was doable. I get some parts in the US from my local toyota dealer (filters etc.) and some from BC. I generally get repair advice from guys on a surf site out of Oz. I lucked out as it is in great shape, very clean and has only about 87K miles which is nothing for a diesel. My original goal was to go with a veggie oil conversion kit but I ended up not doing that.

Just check Craigslist Vancouver, you'll usually find a number of JDM import Toyota diesels(Surf, Hilux, Prado, Land Cruiser, etc.....). Just be careful, there is a lot of stuff Canada will allow in that the States will not. There is some pretty eccentric cars/trucks running around town.
Google "JDM imports BC" , and you'll find many importers.

Not to resurrect the dead but I too have been looking at the Hilux. Saw this dealer on line in BC. Seems to have a lot of RHD Japanese cars.

3.0 Turbo Diesel Fuel Heater

I am new to the forum and the Hilux 3.0 turbo diesel. I was looking under the hood and saw a relay for a fuel heater. How does it operate? Do you turn it on somehow? I don’t see a switch inside the cab anywhere. If anyone has any info in this please help. We are in northern Indiana and it gets chilly here to say the least. Also any suggestions on an engine block heater would be great.

We bought ours from Duncan Imports out of SC. Great people, a little pricey but they import vehicles all the time and know their stuff.
