Hit a deer...

... but the cost difference between the ARB and the stock components is too high for me at the moment.
That surprises me, since for my 3rd gen the original bumper replacements cost $960 and the ARB was about $850. I know the 4th gen ARB costs more than $1000 but I suspected the original bumper to be about that too. Imagine that, Toyota reduced the cost of the bumper. Oh well, just have the ask santa for one this year.
Good luck with the repairs.

Oh, and that deer above.... holy sh!t! That rack acted just like a can opener!

The price difference between lowest priced arb I could find and the estimated replacement costs for the stock bumper leave me with paying at least another $500 for the arb - hence my decision to leave it stock for now.
Another consideration is the apparent need for suspension changes to support the weight of the arb. I would likely go with an OME setup and that would add another $1,000 or more to the project.

This really looks horrible. Here's another bad one:

That is nuts - it looks like a car but do you know for sure?
I believe the deer we hit was a large female as she did not have antlers but I am not a zoologist so feel free to correct me if antlers are not limited to male deers.
Nonetheless, those antlers and/or hooves pose quite the risk when hitting a deer at speed.
We need many more hunters and meat eaters and much less deer.

you are correct. antlers are only on male deer. you hit a doe, a female deer.

i agree with the thing about the antlers, they will go right through the metal on a car or even the windshield for that matter

saw a deer on the tow hitch of a car tonight. that'll be good dinner.

Is it wrong for me to be unimpressed with the way that the 4Runner looks? It honestly looks destroyed and the fact that the airbags went off is surprising to me.

How fast were you going?

Here is a picture of a 100 series land cruiser that hit a Subaru Forester at 70mph. The land cruiser drove through the forester essentially cutting it in half. No airbags went off and the driver and the 3 passengers drove it home 400 miles.

The driver of the Subaru walked away.

We were going 70 with cruise control engaged.

Airbags not going off doesn't tell the whole story. They can be rather finiky. I had a head on collision with a stationary object in my old Runner and they didn't go off. It was a low speed collision but wrecked the truck - and the grill/brush guard didn't help, in fact I think it actually made the situation far worse.

Doesn't look like that landcruiser hit a stationary vehicle full on at 70mph (though please correct me). It it had there would be a heck of a lot more damage. Hitting the deer on the otherhand was more likely like hitting a stationary object, hence the large amount of damage.

The subaru was essentially stationary as it slid on a patch of ice across a highway. The land cruiser hit the back of it as it was crossing and literally broke the subaru in half.

This happened on 394 up here in Minnesota a few years ago. Apparently the deer fell or was knocked off an overpass and onto this Durango.

i took a trip from sw va to nj going on i81 and i78... both ways i saw at least 15 dead deer splattered across the road. Make sure you guys don't speed and stay alert on the roads!

btw do those whistle things you attach to the front of the car actually work? It's supposed to prevent deer from running near your car or scare them away from some high frequency noise.

Absolutely not!! those are myths. my buddy put some on his truck and 3 days later totaled the same truck after hitting a deer and the deer got wrapped around the front wheel, he lost steering went off the road and rolled 5 times with no seat belt and all he got was some cuts and bruises. also know some of my dads friends that had em and still hit a deer that obviously thought the noise sounded good to it cause the deer ran and hit the side of his truck

I may get the 4Runner back on Friday.
I find out tomorrow. I can't get it back soon enough...
