Hitch Cargo Tray - exhaust issues

Has anyone had issues with exhaust fumes or heat damaging any items on a hitch-mounted cargo tray? I'm considering buying one, and so many of them caution you about not using them if your exhaust is a straight pipe out the back.

Any info would be greatly appreciated...considering one for a trip this weekend. Thanks!

Hmm, never really thought about the exhaust causing issues. Quite a few have removed the resonator and routed the exhaust out behind the rear tire. That'd solve your issue, get rid of the bulky resonator, and also cut down on the "rotten egg" smell when accelerating. I'm gonna have that done eventually, shouldn't cost much at all for a local exhaust shop to fab something up.

Yup! Exhaust burnt through 3 layers of a blue poly tarp and singed the hair on the deer that was underneath it. Deer didn't mind much though, he had much bigger issues (.308Win hole) to worry about.

Any muffler shop will be able to move your exhaust for you. It's cheap and very quick too. Depending on the shop it will run you about 30-50 bucks. After I did finally did it I wondered why I didn't do it sooner!

No deer but I have a similar story. I now put down 4, stone floor tiles on that end. Whatever is there gets warm but the tile dissipates the heat enough that blue tarp doesn't burn.
