I just drove about 400 hiway miles and I got about 23 mpg on my 06 V6 with regular 87 in the tank and the A/C on is this good, bad or about normal??

My computer was saying something like 21 mpg but my calculations were about 22.9 mpg ......... I even had a math wizzard "my wife" check it for me

That's not unusual for the v6 engine... Once you find the sweet spot (my '04 v6 likes to be around 66-68 mph) and you will get some really good gas mileage. V6's have been known to get upwards of 25 mpg (calculated) while the V8's usually max out around 20 mpg.

I was getting 20 overall/22 hywy until gas prices went way up. Now I refuse to drive over 65 mph and I have been getting 22 overall/23-24 hywy. I may keep up my slow driving ways, even if gas comes back down again.

Just finished a 2800 mile round trip Colorado "sponveling" [spontaneous traveling] adventure. :dancin:
In the V8 we hand calculated an average 19.6 MPG with a full load in the boot and a hitch carrier full of camping gear. Unleaded fuel prices averaged...$3.29, which really cut into our beer drinking money!!! Loved the scenery and the conditions were absolutely perfect. I highly recommend a road trip of the Colorado high country in May/June. We're seriously jealous of those Coloradans...at least in the summer.

My last highway trip a few weeks ago was a calculated 20.14 MPG and a dash displayed 23.1 MPG. The trip included climbing a bunch of hills and mostly 60-70 mph speeds. Not too bad for a V8 running 87 octane.

I went on a road trip up to Orlando, FL on Saturday and only got 15mpg. I was pulling a car hauler with a 4300lb Mitsubishi Montero on it. The whole rig looked like a training setup as the bottom of the Montero's windshield was higher than the top of the T4R. TS Barry made it a slightly rough ride with 30-40 mph crosswinds. I would guess the hauler weighed 1500-2000 lbs. Acceleration wasn't a problem and I cruised at 65-70 in 4th using premium fuel.
I usually get around 23 mpg here in the Keys on 87 octane, there are very few traffic lights and speed limits are slower than on the mainland, most are 45 mph, so people run 55 or so. Sometimes a good tailwind will put the computer reading over 30 mpg. I know it's not really getting that much, but it sure impresses your passengers when you point to the readout.
I usually get around 23 mpg here in the Keys on 87 octane, there are very few traffic lights and speed limits are slower than on the mainland, most are 45 mph, so people run 55 or so. Forget any mpg figures reported by the trip computer: They are pure fantasy, vastly inflated.
There is only one way to know true mpg:
-Write down odo reading and gallons to fill at your last fill up.
-At your next fill up, record the number of gallons shown on the pump, and determine how many miles have been recorded on the odo.
-Divide miles travelled by gallons used
-This will yield accurate mpg.
-Toyota trip computer "mpg" figures are usually 15% inflated!

On that trip I got 22.27mpg (412 miles divided by 18.5 gallons) (The computer showed 23.1 mpg...so that's about a 3% error.)
I figure my mpg by dividing mileage by gallons of gas used. I make it a habit of filling up to two clicks at the pump. First click allows the foam to settle, second tops it off.
I agree with the sweet spot. I find my 4Runner gets best mpg at around 67mph.
- In town I have found that not racing around makes a big difference. I average about 18mpg with an average round trip commute of 20 miles.
But I got to tell you...you'd think gas was dirt cheap the way other folks were driving. Sticking to the 67mph, folks were passing like crazy. Sorry, but my days of driving like a teenage idiot are over. I don't want to hear anyone bitch about gas prices if they drive like fools.

Good question and I just did. My Nuvi 360 says 2872.3 and the Runner's odo says 2894.2 for the Colorado trip. That is a difference of just under one percent. My Runner has 32,450 miles on it and the original Dunlop tires. The 19.6 MPG is based upon the odo which I believe is more accurate because a turning wheel is a physical calculation [I think], and the GPS is an extrapolated one [I am not an expert by any stretch on GPS navigation]. That said, I have to say that watching the Nuvi tick off miles that it was dead on with the mile marker signs on the Interstates I watched it on.

I hit 25 mpg once (calculated, with 26.5 on the computer), but it was flat, straight, 50 mph, and relatively few stops, over a 75 mile stretch. And that was with winter gas, so it could have been much better if it had been in the summer.
Lift, bigger tires, bumper, and exhaust have dropped my highway mpg average by about 2mpg.
Mpg starts dropping off quickly for me beyond 60 mph.

I get 18 consistently doing 80mph with some hills with the v8. With hills, it drops to 16 0r 17.

23mpg is about as good as I've ever got, and that was at 65mph on a flat-ish route with the wind behind me. I normally average 21mpg on the freeway traveling 65-70mph. As speed increases above 70mph my milage starts to drop under 20mpg.
In my experience the computer is normally about 5% off (too high) for freeway travel and 5-10% too high for city driving.
I've never quite understood why the computer is always wrong, either. It's consistent as well, whether calculating for many tanks of gas or just half a tank of gas, which means somewhere along the way someone programed an algorithm wrong or the gas tank sensor is horribly inaccurate. I suspect the latter.
