Hollow sounds when going over bumps

2005 4r 105,000 miles
This problem started about a year or so ago.

When I drive over bumps the sound is hollow/echoing.
It's more noticeable when driving slow in a parking lot, you can really hear the hollow sound. Instead of the normal noise thats deep when going over bumps it's more hollow sounding inside the truck.

Thats the best way I can describe it. LOL

I took it to my mechanic and he said there was nothing visually wrong.

Does anyone think I just need new shocks or is it more involved than that? (other components of the suspension)

I had similiar issue except I describe mine more as a clunking sound at low speeds over bumps mostly. I read through a thread on here I cannot find it now but its only a few days old, Im not sure how to save threads for quick reference. So i jacked up the front of the truck and checked for wheels bearing wear and had no movement in either wheel up front, started pulling and pushing on my sway bar and noticed a slight play in passenger side so I figured I would start there. Replaced my front sway bar bushings and took it for a short drive, the clunking was gone!
Im not sure this is your issue but its worth checking, bushing cost me $20 at pep boys but I know you can find them a few bucks cheaper online even after shipping.

I brought it to my mechanic and it was the sway bar links and bushings.

Drove it and that noise is gone.

Back to a smooth noise free ride.

I asked him if I should get my shocks/struts replaced as it has not been done since I purchased the truck and I assume it is the originals. (2005 4runner, 105,000 miles)

He said they were not leaking and looked fine.

I asked if replacing them would make for a smoother ride and he said you may not notice a difference.

So I guess I don't need to replace them.

Any thoughts?

I'm not looking to just spend money, I just know after so many years we get used to a certain ride and don't realize X would amount to a better ride etc.

Xs 3 for sway bar bushings. I had the same problem and that's what solved it for me.

Awesome glad the problem is resolved.

I wouldnt worry about replacing struts/shocks unless you were having issues, especially if you are riding smooth now. Im sure new replacements would offer a slightly improved ride but why fork out the money now if your happy with it.

If you plan on lifting your 4runner I would save and wait till your ready.
