Homelink Programming

I have a 2003 Limited that has the Homelink system. I have googled how to set the system and called the manyfacturer of the garage door opener (Overhead Door) and I can not get this to work.

Any suggestions on how to program the Homelink?

In addition to following the instructions in the Toyota manual, the key for me with my Sears garage door opener was to press the button on the opener at the correct time during the process. I programmed my HL quite a while ago, so I do not recall the exact steps, but my many initial attempts at programming the home link to my opener all failed. After reading about the button on the opener, I had the home link programmed pretty quick.

Many have questions on how to program the Homelink buttons. It is in the owner's manual but sometimes it may be confusing to understand the terminology. I've summarized what the manual states, and hopefully this will help anyone in the future (as I have in the past already hehe)


"Ok. Delete the codes in the homelink then try this. (To delete, hold down the first and third buttons at the same time, hold for about 30-60 seconds till the light blinks really fast. Release and check if deleted if the light blinks at a slow but steady pace. That means there's nothing stored on that button)

Hold down the garage door button and the homelink button u want programmed. Once the light changes from a slow blinking light to a rapid blinking light, release both buttons. Then go to the garage door openner and (this is different for all garage door openners) push the "learn" button ONCE. Within 30 secs, press the same button u programmed 3 times, and it should work."

The reset button is the "learn" button on the motor if it's a rolling code unit.

I forgot to mention that if your garage door opener is NOT a rolling code, to ignore the last steps after you get the light (when the homelink button is empty) blinking from slow to a rapid blink.

Tried this last night and it worked perfectly for my rolling code garage door opener!

I registered to say that these instructions worked in about 30 seconds after I made several attempts to follow the instructions in the manual.

I have a 2008 4Runner Limited.

Edit: Forgot to mention I have an Allstar 3500 garage door opener. This opener is NOT a rolling code opener.

Steps I took:

1. Turn key to on position
2. Press buttons 1 and 3 on 4runner until Homelink light flashed rapidly
3. Turn key to off position
4. Turn key to on position
5. Held key on 4runner Homelink
6. Held button on garage door opener remote (garage door opened and light on 4runner homelink flashed slowly)
7. Held both opener remote and homelink button until Homelink light flashes rapidly
8. Release both buttons (garage door closed)
9. Tested Homelink button 4 more times and it opened and closed each time
10. Turned key to off position

I don't think the key needs to be on for Homelink to work. For me it seems to work if the doors are unlocked, and if I lock the doors with the key fob it keeps working for about 30 seconds until the security light goes from solid to flashing. So if you park outside sometimes it's more secure than a regular opener that someone could break into your car and use.
