Homelink Security Issue

I just realized this morning that the Homelink button works even if the ignition is off. I thought perhaps the smart key system allowed it to activate. I took my fob away from the 4Runner and the homelink button still worked for the garage door opener. Does everyone else's do the same?

I don't remember reading anything in the manual that addresses how to deactivate the Homelink system if the igniton is off.

Be careful if you park outside. All anyone has to do to open your garage door is press your Homelink button. This won't affect me since the truck is in the garage 99.9% of the time when I'm home. However, I was really surprised by this. It's very un-Toyota like.

If anyone knows how to deactivate Homelink while the ignition is off, please let me know.

I recommend a good license plate trim ring if you can find one. My personal favorite is "I don't dial 911... I dial .357". If they see that on your driveway they'll move next door :gun5:

If someone is going to break into your car, something tells me they wont have any issue breaking a window or breaking through the garage door to get into your house.... Just my 2 pennies

I like that it does this. My old car had homelink and I had to have the motor on to use it, and that was a drag.

You can always hide your opener or take it out of the car. You don't have that option w/ the Homelink active all the time.

Same as having a garage remote in your car. Use your alarm or get your 4runner rewired for the home link so it is only hot when the ignition is on.
Also there maybe a chance that the dealer can reprogram the 4runner computer so the homelink is only on when the key is on.

I am not sure if things changed in the 5th gen, but my homelink stays active only 2 minutes after the alarm is set. Once the dome lights automatically turn off if left on, the homelink is also activated.

As one other poster said...if you have a door opener in the car, what is the difference? And no point taking the opener out of the car...defeats the purpose. Besides, if someone wants in your home they can get in easily...check out this video:

Mark, thanks for the constructive post. I left the window down, activated the alarm and waited a few minutes. The Homelink button was still hot. It's also not listed as a dealer-configurable Techstream item. Looks like the 5G's Homelink isn't as "smart" as the 4G's.

If I think of it, I'll ask my service advisor when I go in for maintenance. It's not a big deal since it's always in the garage.

Yes, people can break into your home. The point is not to make it any easier than necessary. Go ahead and park outside with your doors unlocked or windows down - you might not get your glass broken out. :frisky::frisky::frisky:

I will try this again on my 4th gen and time it. I haven't played with it in a long time

Nothing to get bent out of shape over. I'd love this to be something simple or obvious that I'm missing.

The fob was in the other end of the house away from the 4Runner. I really don't think the smart key system is that smart, but I left the fob far away from the truck just in case.

ARGH! ADT - what a piece of crap - I finally had to pay to break my contract with them - sooooooo many false alarms. Every ADT technician that came out said the last ADT guy installed everything wrong! Never again!

Just tried this again in my 4th gen and the homelink buttons deactivated after 30 seconds. This is really weird.

Garage door opener in my 2010 SR5 is always on too. Doesn't bother me though I never lock backdoor to garage anyway.
