Homemade snorkel how-to?

Hey all,

I just got myself a 1988 4runner v6. she runs good, but shes just my weekend trail truck. On one of my recent wheeling trips i went through some water to find out that it was much deeper then i expected. Much to my wife's dismay, i hydro-locked the engine -___- so my buddies and I spent the remainder of the afternoon and a good portion of the evening getting the engine to run once more. After that afternoon (and after some very obvious hinting from the wife), I realized that a snorkel was next on my to-do list. So i started my search for a good snorkel. If I were to buy one it would run me over $300. No bueno. So I started my search anew looking for some instruction on how to build my own. I found many people who have built a snorkel, but instruction on how to do so seems to be very limited.

I'm sure I could figure out how to do with the process of elimination, but i do have one big question. On top of my air filter box there is an aluminum sensor. The first time i was trying to recover from the hydro-lock the engine wouldn't start. I was about to give up so i started putting the intake system back together. My buddy was cranking it over one last time and as soon as i connected the air box to the intake manifold it fired right up.

What is this thing on top of my air box? Why wouldn't it let the engine start until it was connected to the manifold? Is there any way i can by-pass this?

That aluminum sensor is your maf it senses how.much air is going to engine and adjusts air ratios it is set up so if that is disconnected the engine will not stay running

Thank you for clearing that up for me. I figured it may be something like that but i wasn't too sure. Too bad i cant just get rid of it and run the snorkel through a filter and right to the manifold.
 
i have a frienf who took the stock airbox and intake tube and used it to make a snorkel.

he opened up the airbox and blocked off the inlet with a piece of plastic and silicone. then drilled a hole in the top and epoxy'd in a large diameter pvc coupler (that was cut in half to shorten it) then drilled a hole in the hood.. when he's cruisin around town he's taking in 100% fresh cold air and nothin protrudes out of the hood.

but when he hits the water he stops and gets out and sticks a 2.5 foot piece of pvc into the coupler through the hood and whala! instant snorkel!
